  • Stairway to Heaven

    Hi All,

Apparently, Mount Everest is soon to be fitted with a ladder.

    Now I've heard it all.

Move welcomed by Nepalis hoping to expand climbing industry but opposed by mountaineers who want to preserve challenge

    Regards,

    Simon

Will there be stores at the top, or will they be all closed?

      word power

      Hello Robert.

It is of no consequence. With a word they can get what they came for.

      Cheers.

        Hi Robert,

As I understand it, there will be a 24/7 Shopping Mall at the summit, replete with T-shirts and assorted coffee mugs [all made in China] bearing the I-Heart-Everest motif.

        Regards,

        Simon

          Hi Robert,

My brother went on a coach trip to the Pyramids some years ago and found them closed to the public for maintenance.

To add insult to injury, the coach broke down on the return journey and the passengers were stranded for hours in sweltering heat waiting for one vehicle to come and take the women and children and another to come later for the men.

          Love,

          Caz

Could have been worse, Caz - he might have gone all that way to find they were still building the things.

I'm reliably informed by a mountaineering friend that the Chinese installed a ladder at the Hillary Step at least as far back as the 1960's, but that 'serious' climbers wouldn't use it. Apparently it became unsafe (except for Chinese climbers) and was removed at some time.

Hi there, welcome to the Summit Of Everest Macdonald's. What can I get you today, apart from frostbite?

And, I hope, an awesome slide for on the way back.

I was listening to an article about this on BBC Radio 4 yesterday. It seems that the path to the peak is getting crowded these days and a ladder, although still tricky, is a safe option to cover the last bit of the climb.

                  Ooooh, it makes me wonder.
