  • Survival/Hiking - Esbit Folding Stove

Just got one of these folding stoves which goes by the name Esbit Ultralight Folding Pocket Stove. Apparently they have been around since World War II. Whoever invented these is a genius. They are constructed from metal that folds up not much bigger than a deck of cards so that it will fit in your pocket. When open it supports a pot. It comes with six fuel tablets, four of which fit in the stove so you will always have them with you. Each tablet burns for around 12 minutes and you should be able to boil water in about 8 minutes. Virtually foolproof. Lightweight and only around ten dollars.

Another great item to go with it is called the GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Bottle Cup/Pot. It is designed to fit over the bottom of a quart nalgene bottle so it only takes up minimal space in your pack. It has folding handles and sells for around twelve dollars.

Both items are available from amazon.com

These are great items to have in a survival bag or for day hiking. You can enjoy some coffee or tea or instant soup and possibly prevent hypothermia.
    They both get excellent reviews.

Life being life there always seems to be a catch so you should know that the fuel tablets smell like dead fish. I keep them in the stove which helps and I put the stove in doubled up zip lock bags which seems to stop the smell.

I am going hiking in Cumbria later this year but i shan't need a stove as then Dungeon Ghyll pub is real close. I want to visit Snowdonia and the Scottish Highlands also.

      Hello Scorpio,

Sound like a good trip. I have to say I am envious. All hiking trips should come with a nearby pub. Even better would be a pub that you could fold up and keep in your pocket.

Don't use it in an enclosed space as the gas produced will do you a mischief. These are standard army issue and come with 24 hour ration packs. My late dad used to pinch a few for me to take to bike rallies every so often.
