Easily the victim that elicits the strongest emotions due to the personal venue and the horrific injuries. Wish we knew about her. Because the Mary Kelly as her stories have been told has not be locatable in any birth records, one wonders if the family she had ever knew of her terrible end.

      Agree with everything you say.

I'm guessing, but I would say the family knew of her fate but had their reasons in staying quiet.

A long time ago - I think Christianity had been introduced to Wales by then, but I can't be sure - when I was a naive teenager, I was horrified that society didn't provide a safety net for a young woman left with nothing when her husband was killed in a mining accident. I suspect it was more 'real' because the mines were still functioning. Anyway, I started to try and piece together her life, quickly realising that that was not at all an easy job. I searched the local newspapers for reports of the accident in which the husband was killed, got such records of mining accidents that existed, and so on and so forth. In time my interest expanded and eventually I inflicted a few books on a public that had done me no harm. It was Mary Kelly that kickstarted it all for me.

            Hi Paul,

I could just about stand another of your books inflicted on me and wonder if you could say when the latest A-Z might be published?

            Cheers,

            Martyn

              Hi Martyn
I have no idea at the moment about the A to Z. Hopefully next year, we're all working on it almost full time, but there have been a number of problems beyond our control that have delayed things. We had trouble with the database software, tried moving it somewhere else, that didn't work, and we had to get it back to the original database. That wasted a ton of time earlier this year. We seem to have encountered problem after problem. But it's coming along now. I'm probably the one holding things up because I took a short break to do some other business. So, hopefully not too long...

You may have to revise the entry for John McCarthy (born Spitalfields, not Dieppe, France).

Every entry has been rewritten. I can't say whether every one has been revised, but most certainly have.

Hi Michael. I think it's a bit misleading to say Mary Kelly has not been locatable in any birth records. At the last check, the were over ten girls named Mary Kelly born in either Limerick City or County c 1855 to 1866, whose father was named John, as per the basic story. It's the lack of Irish census records (first available is 1901) to pinpoint and keep a track that is the problem when trying to discover what happened to any one of these women

The John McCarthy who was Mary's landlord was born in Spitalfields, his wife was Mary, not Elizabeth and he had one son, George (not a bunch of daughters and two domestic servants).
