  • Searchus Interruptus

    Hi All,

Searches on Casebook are being considerably slowed, and my time wasted, by intrusive marketing sites which snoop into what I'm up to and then sell my information to purveyors of home insurance, hemorrhoid cream, boner pills, cheapo Korean cars and the like.

    Here's a selection I managed to screen-grab.

If I disable them the Casebook search function ceases to work.

It doesn't happen in the "other place".

    How do I stop them?

    Regards,

    Simon

Hello Simon. Is your web browser Firefox? If not, you might give it a go. IE is NOT a very good browser.

    Cheers.

Hi Simon. Like Lynn, I use Firefox. It sounds like you might have picked up some spyware. But you can run a few easy cleanups that might take care of the problem.

      - Have you updated your security system? (Whether Windows Defender or another security program. You can also set them to update automatically.)

      - Have you emptied your Cache, run a Disk Cleanup, etc?

      - Do you have your Pop-Blocker activated?

      - Is your Firescreen activated? (Or did you disable it to let some other program download and forget to activate it again?)

      - Have you run a Spyware/Malware Scan? They take a little while but can run in the background while you're working on other things. Windows Defender and other security programs have good ones. (*Don't download from a 3rd party site- they will install toolbars etc and sometimes malware!)

If you want a free security program that will do quite a bit automatically, Avira is good. I've used it for a while & haven't had any problems at all. It slows startup a little, but it's well worth it to not get viruses & spyware.

      Best regards,
      Archaic

        Hi Lynn and Archaic,

        Thank you very much.

I have cleared my cache, run Microsoft Security Essentials and installed the Firefox add-on Adblock Plus.

        Everything is now tickety-boo.

        Regards,

        Simon
