  • Little Blue Plaques

Who or what events earned a little blue plaque marking something of historic significance in your town?

Those inthe town I grew up included:

    A pair of shoemaking saints.
Robert Heller the musician and magician.
Captain Jack Birdy, Pirate of Tunis
    A pioneer of early film
    A murdered mayor
King James visiting, escaping and being captured during the civil war.

And I thinkthere may be one for the last armed rebelion in England (it was about the poor laws and Sir Nicholas Courtney -not the one from Doctor Who- turned out not to be quite so as immortal or messiahish as he believed) but am probably wrong.

Oh and the largest accidental explosion in the UK explosives industry might have earned one too.

Welcome back TomTom. Lovely to hear from you again.

I was born in Walthamstow (now east London - then Essex) and as a socialist and an admirer of art, poetry and architecture - I couldn't be more proud than to have been born just a few paces from the birthplace of William Morris.

Sadly, I now live almost 100 miles away - but it's always nice to go 'home' and stroll around the old 'manor'!
