Anything is possible. If it happens in nature it can happen in a lab.
Consciousness is a specific area of the brain that is embedded deep into our DNA. It is speculated it could have been an ancient virus that altered the human genome.

It is simply (not so simple) understanding which part of the brain houses the synapses specifically responsible for controlling the conscious mind. Most likely those same synapses control much of our communication with our body too.
Extracting this part of the brain post-mortem is rather pointless. The more the brain is starved of oxygen the less of it will be usable.
The best chance is probably using something like "brain lace" that Elon Musk is developing. It could map the brain layout and genetic make-up of the host brain and make a virtual copy of it. If the technology advances well enough "a back-up" of a certain point in time could then be flashed onto a computer. A bit like backing up your hard drive onto the cloud. That version then is "paused" ready to be activated once the human body dies. It could then be activated virtually, thereby giving your consciousness eternal life. Heaven becomes realised. On the cloud.
Then this Black Mirror episode becomes possible:
That's my hope at least

The most publicised preternatural phenomenon are either cases of mass hysteria (the Enfield Poltergeist is studied in basic psychology classes as an instance of folie a sept) or noted frauds posing as mediums. However there is no denying the overwhelming coincidences that follow a person's death or phenomena such as deja vu that haven't really been properly investigated.
Ultimately though, as comedian Doug Stanhope said, if you are "... remembering the dead, honouring their memory, trying to repeat what they did well and reject the values that would have got them sacked from a babysitter's job, is that not afterlife? Is that not afterlife enough?"
