Axe Man of New Orleans Or "Axe Men"

I think there is already a thread on this but I couldn't find it. Watched a show last night in which they came to the conclusion that it was actually "Axe Men" plural. Their argument was that the murders were carried out by members of the Black Hand against Mafia members. Sort of a turf war trying to control the extortion racket. They made some really good points.

I’ve recently read The Axeman Of New Orleans by Miriam C Davis c.d. and I can really recommend it. I read the reviews beforehand and it looked like many people who appeared to know something about the case considered it the best on the subject.
