  • Sixth grader in Idaho injures 3 in shooting

A sixth-grade girl is in custody, charged with opening fire at her school in a shooting that injured three people before a teacher disarmed her. The shock in the small Idaho town where it happened is intensified by her young age. NBC’s Erin McLaughlin reports for TODAY.

In the United States, children in sixth grade are generally about eleven years of age. This case is remarkable for the shooter being a little girl!

Idaho is one of our more conservative states and I imagine guns are fairly easily accessible. If she brought it from home her parents should be charged right along with her, but local laws probably don't allow for that.

I think the comment from the girl that she wanted the teacher to "kill her" is disturbing in the extreme. We need much more emphasis on mental health solutions when discussing gun violence prevention.

Sigh... expect more media discussions about "gun rights" and "gun control". And if that town is "shocked" -- good! They need it!

    Ugghh!

    That's truly grim.

This seems to keep happening time and time again ad nauseum, but nothing ever really changes.

I totally agree that mental health needs to be a factor in the dialogue around this, as well as the inevitable "gun control" conversation, which sadly never seems to go anywhere.
