  • 73 year old woman with dementia injured in arrest

The Loveland police officers who violently arrested a 73-year-old woman with dementia last year laughed about the incident afterward and congratulated themselves about the arrest, video released Mo…

It was startling enough to hear that a 73 year old white woman with dementia who didn't realize her card transaction at Walmart hadn't finished and walked away with $15 worth of purchases was forcibly arrested by a Loveland, Colorado policeman who ended up dislocating her shoulder, breaking her arm and straining her wrist.

It was even worse to see video from the inside of the police station where the white cop boasted about how "well" things "went down" and how you could hear "the pop", apparently when he injured her. Sickening.

They also left her handcuffed with arms behind her on a bench for hours before getting her medical attention.

Now the poor dear is on anti anxiety medication. And the store? They said they called the cops because when employees took back the woman's items she managed to pull down someone's mask.

I saw that in the paper here.

    It's disgusting.

I can only imagine how distressed the poor woman and her family must be.

The family is suing, of course. Their demands were announced yesterday. They want five cops fired and charged criminally. I think that is reasonable. They are right about how silent the police have been since last summer, when this happened. I hear the investigation is being conducted by an outside police department, which is something, anyway.

Video shows Colorado police officers laughing over bodycam footage of 73-year-old woman's violent arrest

The female officer had the decency to become "uncomfortable" while watching the bodycam footage, but the male officer is a thug, in my opinion. He acts as if he scored high in a video game!

This story is from CNN, and The NY Times also covered it in an article. It is travelling much further than their station house.
To think Loveland is usually only in the news every February when people mail their Valentines from there!

Out here the police slogan is often "To Protect and Serve", but that seems a joke now in many places.

Update: The three officers seen laughing over the bodycam footage of an elderly woman being arrested last June have now all resigned and will possibly face charges. This story, it was mentioned tonight is not only national news, but also international news.

The police chief spoke today and assured us that the behavior those officers showed on the video footage does not represent his department.

The woman is suing the police department for her injury.
Charges against her were dropped quite a while ago, meaning the arrest was unnecessary.

And I was wrong about the value of items she was accused of "stealing" -- they were just under $14, not fifteen.

Body-camera footage showed an officer pinning Karen Garner down and placing her in handcuffs in June 2020. A follow-up video showed three officers praising and mocking the arrest.

UPDATE: Since I first posted about this case of police officers using "excessive force" on a 73 year old woman who didn't understand what they were saying to her due to dementia and difficulties in processing and understanding speech:

The woman was diagnosed with PTSD and required to move away from her caring family and into a long-tern memory care facility.

The City of Loveland settled with the family for 3 million dollars, and this has put an end to their federal case.

The police officers involved have been disciplined by their police force and still may face a criminal trial.

The Loveland, CO. Police chief has apologized and made promises of change.
