      I saw Nugent live once in the early 1980s at the Hammersmith Odeon. A friend was into him and had a spare ticket so i went with him.

      At some point between songs, talking to the audience, he started talking about Princess Di.
      Let me see if I can get it right, he said something like "I'd drag my dick through a mile of broken glass just to w*nk in her shadow."
      These are not clues, Fred.
      It is not yarn leading us to the dark heart of this place.
      They are half-glimpsed imaginings, tangle of shadows.
      And you and I floundering at them in the ever vainer hope that we might corral them into meaning when we will not.
      We will not.
