  • Pc Tony White's Medals

In 1975 two Nottinghamshire police officers captured the notorious 'Black Panther', Donald Neilson. I still remember the headline in the Nottingham Evening Post: "Notts Police May Have Panther". If anyone has deep enough pockets P.c. Tony White's medals, handcuffs & pocket book are to be sold at auction. The 'biggie' is the one with the blue, white & red ribbon, the Queen's Gallantry Medal. The other two are the Police Long Service & Good Conduct Medal and the Cadet Services Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.

Nottinghamshire Police still have Neilson's sinister black clothing in a display case, I believe, but not on public view.

    Regards, Bridewell.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

For the benefit of any (other!) police anoraks out there, the handcuffs are Hiatt 1960's which should have been handed in and exchanged for the less robust Hiatt 1970's which were supposed to replace them.

Just as a postscript to the above, I was talking to a former colleague earlier this week who told me that Pc's White & McKenzie were carpeted by their Chief Superintendent the following day for being double-crewed! Had they not been, of course, one of them would have been murdered.

The Chief Superintendent was moved from one end of the county to the other - and rightly so.
