  • hi, more of a family history than jack

hi, i`m new so i`ll post here till i get the hang of forum etiquette .
i, like all right thinking kids was facinated by victorian crime/ripper/homes.
and have visited here for years, but never had anything to contributed,
so here i stayed lurkeing in the shadows,
now i`m an old fart of 42, ive been haveing fun playing detective with my family tree,
never thinking i may find a whitechapel connection,
    but i have. ya..
my 3rd great grandfather on my mothers side was a policeman.

    Joseph Godfrey
    born Jan 1852

    1871 haven`t found him
but his daughter Hannah Elizabeth Godfrey born 1871
    my 2nd great grandmother,
lists her place of birth in the 1911 census as whitechapel

1881 census has him listed living at
3 Gloucester Street, Bethnal Green, London

in 1891 he has moved to
15 Parmiter Street, Bethnal Green, London

    his 2nd wife
    Mary Sophia Willsher
born 1862, lists on her wedding banns in 1905 as
17 west harbour steet, commercial road
ive been unable to find west harbour street in google ?

does any one no of a web site i can find more infomation on him.
or if he had any direct link to the case.
even if he was one of the poor sods in a dress

    many thanks kevin

There is some useful information about tracing police ancestors on the website of the National Archives, including links to some records that are freely available online:

      Hi Kevin,

Well, what do you know? My grandmother was living in Parmiter Street in 1901 - at no 4. She lived there until 1908, when she married my grandfather at nearby St John's Church.

      Good luck with your research.

      Julie
