  • But you have to feel sorry for the people of York after six centuries of scouring the land for Richard's remains.... Sorry did I say "centuries of scouring the land"? I meant "weeks of jumping on the bandwagon"!
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

Having had the pleasure of a day in Leicester with Neil a couple of weeks ago, when we took a look at this slab, it is fair to say that it would indeed be impractical to place a raised tomb in the same location, Leicester Cathedral is no larger than some parish churches. Why does it need to be a raised tomb though?

        • I think the short answer is, it doesn't need to be a raised tomb.

I suspect that the RIII Society might like one because it would be (no pun intended) a "step up" in terms of memorial.

The present flat slab was a "cenotaph" (no body within) the new one will be a tomb.

Whether they have any idea of seeking to emulate the original (Henry VII funded) tomb is another matter.

But a floor level brass, or even something similar to the present memorial slab would be nice in my view. I'm sure they'll have NO problem raising funds whatever the cost.

(Ideally, I'd love to see a chest tomb with a stone or metal effigy of RIII in armour and all his heradlic blazons round the sides England, York, Boar, Falcon & Fetterlock, Mortimer, Neville etc etc - like Richard Beauchamp's tomb at Warwick - but it would have to be away from the place of honour at Leicester in its own chapel. Would that be a bad thing?)

              • Well, the best way for peace to break out would be for YORK to withdraw from a competition that doesn't exist and to admit their claim has no merit.

And no, no abusive letters from me (though I am told by Ms Cornwell that Walter Sickert may have sent some).

It's gotten trendy to dig up old kings.

Hmm, I think we need to coin a term for this phenomena...

                    Hello Phil,

You have given me an idea... perhaps..the fellow that painted the famous painting of Richard III..hid some secret messages in the painting... references to the boys in the tower perhaps...where Stephen's arrow really struck him....and of course.. the true story surrounding Edward II's anal fistula problem.... LOL.

                    • Well there is a belief that some copies of Holbein's painting of the Family of Thomas More (ironically) contain clues to the fact that one individual portrayed on the canvas is Richard of York, the younger of the "princes".

I think you mean William II (Rufus) rather than Stephan - Rufus was shot in the New Forest.

On Edward II it is now strongly argued that he in fact lived on as a hermit in Italy and met his son (Edward III) on the Rhine some years later. It is not related whether the hermit had a phobia about pokers!

                          - Ooh, Colin, that's brilliant!!

Now I think we need to start a petition to get "Rexhumation" added to the 2014 Oxford Dictionary of the English Language!

And "Rexhumomania" to describe those who race about the country in a feverish attempt to dig up every dead king before the next guy does it.
(There, a bit of my "Exhumomania" word worked its way in. )

Colin, you may have to go on the talk show circuit, you know, to raise awareness... but it will be worth it in the end. (Better go out and buy a new suit so you're ready. Shine your shoes. And practice deportment, inflection, refraction, all that stuff.)

'Rexhumation' really should have been a word all along. It's much better than all the computer geek-speak that keeps creeping into English, despoiling our native tongue.

                          Well done, Colin!

                          - Sorry, that emoticon's really scary-...here, this is better:

                          Cheers,

                            • If you are interested in RIII, this dvd may interest you. I received it today and can thoroughly recommend it.

It is an "amateur" production and that shows, but you get an exceptionally good idea of RIII's favorite home, and the computer graphics are accomplished enough.
