Post count to date on Casebook...

When you quote a post on casebook the quote tag contains a reference like n720123.
This reference presumably is used to fire the notification back to the original poster?

Does this reference indicate, more or less, the number of posts on Casebook to date?

(Unless reset post crash or whenever?)

It's a reference number used to give each post a unique ID, much like you said. It would almost certainly be a serial value. There are other ways to manage unique ID, but a serial counter that ratchets up by one each time is the easiest and most sensible, and almost always used in a low-security environment. You can start the count with an offset value, but for most purposes, offset=0 is fine. You normally start at n=0, so n720123 would be the 720,124th post, since n0 would have been first.

Thanks Ginger. Agree with all you said.

The nxxxxxx number is probably a notification number. The user clicks on the notice in their account and system looks up
this number in a notification table for the thread id, post id and then sends the user there.

Deconstructing how might systems work is a habit from years of programming...

Doesn't 700,000++ posts sound like a lot? 60% re Lechmere...
