  • Four day weekend!

    I don't think I've heard of one of those in the UK before. What are you guys doing with all that time off?

    Hi Ken

    It's the Queen's Jubilee - 60 years.

    We normally have a bank holiday at the end of May but that has been moved to this weekend and they've thrown in an extra day.

    Thousands of street parties going on.

    Tomorrow there is a pageant going down the Thames. Hundreds of boats involved.

    The country seems to have become obsessed with it.

    I'm doing the gardening and then off to the allotment to pick our first strawberries of the year!

      Well I enjoyed watching the flotilla move down the Thames. Too bad the weather wasn't better. My admiration for the Queen just continues to grow. She's been working since she was a child and she doesn't get to retire. What a trooper.

          Lot of people watching the Diamond Jubilee here. 60 year rule. Even Augustus only had 45. Did she beat Elizabeth I?

          Sounds kind of fun. It's good to unite.

            I watched the Thames Pageant and it was quite interesting to begin with. However, after about an hour it became very boring and I almost fell asleep. I never thought I'd say this but when you've seen one boat you've seen 'em all.

            The Queen will probably be glad when the whole shebang is over and done with.

            Typical British weather though - it was pi$$ing with rain throughout.

            A four day holiday is all very nice and that's fine for those who work in the public sector. It's not so good for those employers who are forced to give their employees an extra day off without pay.

              Here's a poem for Queenie--

              Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee's
              celebrated on the Thames with glee;
              the rain may be tippling down
              yet no one wears a frown;
              time for all of us to cheer for Queen E!

                Oh yes, she beats them all bar one (in British terms at least)...

                Jeffrey Archer, who has a flat overlooking the river apparently displayed a large banner which read

                "60 years... congratulations ma'am but the record is 63 years 7 months"

                The latter being a reference to Queen Victoria

                  It's still a remarkable achievement even though she has not quite yet beaten Victoria's record.

                  All the best

                    Victoria did have a bit of a headstart, coming to the throne at the age of 18, as opposed to 25. If the present queen lives as long as her mother, though, she'll overtake Louis XIV as well as VR

                      Has she beaten George III? It's a shame we haven't got Fluff Freeman to do a chart rundown for us : still at numer one, for the 111th year running, it's Queen Victoria. Not 'arf!

                        Hi Robert,

                        Yes. George III was 59 years & 9 months. He's at No.3 in the charts!

                        Surprisingly only the top three have made it to their 78th birthday.

                        Regards, Bridewell

                          I just read that the show closes with a concert, and Paul McCartney is doing it!

                          Wish I could be there for that. Beatlemania is still alive in MY heart

                          Wonder if he'll do any of the refrain, 'Her majesty's a pretty nice girl...'

                            Yeah but the Sun King came to the throne at 5 years old...and only ruled by virtue of a regent (his mother) until he achieved his majority...and (1638 to 1715) he didn't reach his 78th birthday either did he?

                            Giving away your age Barbara! (like me!)
