[The Good Michael]

Well, I have sort of decided to travel in the UK before the Olympics for about 3 weeks. My main objectives are to get to Aberdeen from London and then to Lerwick. I also would like to do the impossible and find a Scot who would buy me an ale, a good one, not some lager like Carlsberg or Stella, but maybe a Skullsplitter or something. Yes, I know that will be difficult.

After Shetland, i'd like to hop a ship to the Faroes. I don't think that's likely, but I'll check into that. Then, to Orkney for a few days... because I want to get to Hoy this time around, then... I'm open. I figure it will be about 9 days of open time. I'll slowly make my way back south. Throw me some ideas please.

a few of mine: WALES, Mt. Snowden climbing; looking at some of the old monasteries which (perhaps) gave rise to the Irish equivalents; Bardsey Island and things Arthurian (because I know he was Welsh!); Anglesey (Mon), because it was the seat of Celtic wisdom; CORNWALL: Isles of Scilly, St Michael's Mount (named after me in anticipation of my birth)

I guess I love islands. I don't care for the hot, lie-in-the-sun and drink sissy drinks with umbrellas and listen to really bad calypso music, kinds of islands. I prefer islands where people work and live and tourism is a nuisance more than of massive economical importance.

Any tips? I would love to meet any and all of you Casebookers who might be in any of the vicinities I will be in, though my plans are, as of yet, simple.

nice plans for a trip. I can recommend a Hotel in East London (on Osborne Street) which has interesting rates, esp. if you book online from a NON British site. (German internet booking site offers very affordable rates.)

In Cornwall you can surf. And if you go to the Faroes, you can take a ferry to Iceland!

I've surfed in Texas and in Hawaii. I don't think a person goes to the UK to surf. I mean if I was bored out of my mind sure, but it would be like going to Dubai for the golf.... not that I would go to Dubai for anything. I've been to Iceland and Orkney, but Shetland has eluded me. This time, by God, I'll get there. The Faroes, who knows?

London... I have to admit that I like London about as much as I like New York, Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo. To me they are all just big cities with people in a hurry, selling the same junk. If i stay in London it will be with a friend. I enjoy the countryside the most and a cozy pub and a B&B or a little room in a pub. Failing that, I don't mind sleeping outside. I absolutely hate hotels and hostels. Only tourists are there.

Once I cycled around much of America and went to Mantauk and Orient Points. I'd agree that Long Island, out there is so much nicer than NYC. It's like an extension of Connecticut.

And I've change my plan. I am going to find 1 Scot every DAY who will buy me a beer.

I wrote a history of the local St. Andrew's Society and had to interview one of the elderly members in his home. It amused me that although he gave me a glass of scotch whisky, he made sure to give me the cheap brand and not the expensive brand he was drinking!

That's how the distilleries are too. They give you a "wee dram" of about 2 year old shite and there's no way I would buy anything from them. Had they given me at least a bit of 20 year stuff, they would have had a customer.

My mission is looking impossible.

I guess I love islands.

If you're going north to Scotland, you've got Lindisfarne (Holy Island) off the Northumberland coast. I'm not sure how commercialised it is nowadays as it's a long time since I've been up there.
