    Hi All,

I'm in the USA market for a 1080p HDTV, 55 inch screen. No fancy-schmancy internet connectivity; just reliable, with excellent picture and sound, plus the requisite number of in and out sockets. I don't think I care whether its plasma or LCD.

All the conflicting internet reviews have got me completely flummoxed, so any personal recommendations would really help me decide.

    Many thanks.

    Regards,

    Simon

Hi Simon. They're pretty much all good, and many are available at pretty good prices. A lot of people seem pleased with the large screens Wal Mart are selling.

    Yours truly,

      Was ist?

Hello Simon. Um, what is an HD TV anyway? Are there any programmes on, anyway?

      Cheers.

Can't tell you what to buy but I can tell you what NOT to buy.. A Vizio. Pure crap they are. The first one arrived with a black spot in the screen so they replaced it and the replacement crapped out at 13 months--one month past Warranty of course.

          Let all Oz be agreed;

            Hi Ally,

            Many thanks.

            Vizio was on my shortlist.

            But not any more, methinks.

            Regards,

            Simon

              Hello Simon,

I bought a Samsung based on the reviews I read (mostly on amazon.com). I have been extremely pleased with it.

I can only speak for the one I have, a Sharps, 1080p, 52", LCD. Excellent.

I won it (I actually won the price of a HDTV of my choice), so had the luxury of researching the best HDTV available, price was not a concern.
Sharps invented flat screens, so I was told, and are still the best on the market.

Be aware that Plasma screens shine like a mirror, very annoying if you have reflected sunlight through a window, and the room is not always totally dark.
Also, Plasma create a great deal of heat internally, if you're an avid TV watcher you can run up the KW's if its on hour after hour.

                Good luck.

                  Hi c.d.,

Samsung. Another on my short list.

"Extremely pleased" sounds right up my street.

                  Thank you. Much appreciated.

                  Regards,

                  Simon

                    Hello Simon,

I am sure that you realize that although the TV that you buy is HD compatible you still have to get HD from your cable company. I get mine with a DVR box and it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Press one button and it records the program when it comes on. You can set it weeks in advance. Highly recommended.

                      Hi c.d. and Wickerman,

I have an HD box from Time Warner. If I talk to it nicely it will record three shows at once.

Thank you, Wicky, for the heads-up on the plasma heat issue. I had no idea, and the numb-nuts at Best Buy will tell you anything you want to hear. Mind you, it does sound like a plasma TV could do double-duty by replacing our useless toaster.

Putting it all together, with Ally's Vizio warning, it sounds like a Samsung LCD might fit the bill.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your help.

                      Regards,

                      Simon

Do not get a DLP, worse TV that I ever bought. Bad enough to change the bulb every 2000 hours, which is not cheap, but the light engine wears out and costs nearly as much as the tv. 65 inches of trouble.
I confess that altruistic and cynically selfish talk seem to me about equally unreal. With all humility, I think 'whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might,' infinitely more important than the vain attempt to love one's neighbour as one's self. If you want to hit a bird on the wing you must have all your will in focus, you must not be thinking about yourself, and equally, you must not be thinking about your neighbour; you must be living with your eye on that bird. Every achievement is a bird on the wing.
