Obese Child Taken from Parents, Placed in Foster Care

Brilliant. Simply brilliant. I am absolutely sick to death of seeing fat parents with, you guessed it, fat children. There is no excuse, there are no lies about 'glands' and 'slow metabolisms', there is simply child abuse. If the child was malnourished, this would not even be an issue. It is an appalling and generally under-discussed crime that is allowed to continue because we are 'not supposed to mention the fact that people are fat'.

I would just caution people who see obese children to not necessarily attribute blame to the parents. I trust that DCS fully investigated this case, but there are in fact medical conditions that can cause a child to be obese, or to appear obese. In third grade a girl came back to school and was huge. She endured a lot of teasing and bullying because of it, until one day she disappeared. A week later they had an assembly to inform us that she had leukemia, and had died. The radiation or chemo had trashed her glands, and she wasn't fat as much as she was grossly swollen. She didn't tell anyone because she didn't want to be treated differently. Everyone felt terrible about teasing her.
It's not common, but it happens. So you know, just don't cuss out some parents until you get the whole story. The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

I appreciate there are very rare circumstances in which an underlying disease or disorder may cause obesity, or at least the appearance of obesity. But really, how many of those fat children sitting with fat parents in McDonalds, eating an adult-sized meal deal have leukemia?
99.9% of the time it is simply a matter of laziness and stupidity on the part of the parents. It makes me angry and sad in equal measure, and with the exception of underlying causes there is absolutely NO excuse. Children should be taken away from abusive parents at the first possible instance - no ifs, no buts, no excuses.

Reinstate bullying
if a child is fat in under high school age, he should be picked on mercilessly. With strong character, he'll take the matter in hand and start working out or losing weight, maybe even becoming an athlete. If he's in high school, approach with caution as he might kick your ass.
Yours truly,
Tom Wescott
