Change of plan: ended up watching "Don't Lose Your Head". The only Carry On film I'd never seen before. It's quite interesting--a little slower than your average outing, and a certain degree of sublety in the humour.
I just notices that in my earlier list of the best Carry On flicks, not a single one featured Barbara Windsor. That's a little surpising, since she's so closedly associated with the films in the public mind.
Last night I watched "Carry On Up The Khyber", the night before it was "Carry On Cleo", tonight I'm watching "Carry On England".
It's pretty amazing the range of quality. "Khyber" and "Cleo" are two of the best (certainly in the top five), whereas Carry On England is definately toward the bottom. (I confess I've never been able to get past the first 15 minutes of 'Carry On Emmanuelle')
Anyone else care to share their "Carry On" memories?
Hi Magpie!
Per-Åke (my Swedish husband) and myself LOVE the Carry On films. We have a large collection of them, but it's not complete. Every time we go to England to visit my family we go into EVERY charity shop we come across to see if we can find any old Carry On videos. This last holiday we found 'Carry on at your Convenience' which we hadn't seen before! Unfortunately we still haven't seen it as our video player is on the blink.
My personal five favourites are:
Carry on Constable
Carry on Cabbie
Carry on Abroad
Carry on Screaming
Carry on Nurse
I don't think Carry On has been broadcast in my locality. I have seen a couple of them, probably Carry On Emmanuelle and Carry On Doctor. I wasn't impressed, but they can't be the best of the series.
This thread made me recall an interview with Alan Moore regarding the 2001 film adaptation of his Jack the Ripper -themed graphic novel From Hell - I'm sure you know it. Now then, Mr. Moore is an eccentric fellow who hasn't watched any film adaptations of any of his work, and has no interest in doing so. I'm not even sure why he agreed to the interview, but he did, and they asked him how he felt about the movie taking liberties with the story. He replied;
"I'd be happy if they made Carry on Ripping. It's not my book, it's their film."

My favourite line from a Carry On film was where 'Matron' (Hattie, of course) cornered Kenneth Willams, (playing the Principal of a girls school) in a tent and threw herself on him
"Careful, Matron, please" (he recoils in horror "Remember, I was once a weak man"
"Oh that's alright" she coos "Once a week's enough for any man"
I like Carry On Camping and Carry On Regardless and all the old Carry Ons but I am not so keen on the historical ones.
