  • Apologies to Stewart Evans...

I apologize for suggesting SPE admit his book on Tumblety is crap. Bad day/week/month/year, whatever.
I would have posted this on the other site the comment was made on but separate events have now made admin lock that thread.
SPE has made an insane amount of important contributions to this case, and to me personally, and I was out of line.

My contributions to this site should be removed.

    The Lodger
    Letters From Hell
    Sourcebook
    Inspector Reid
    Scotland Yard Investigates.

I am happy to own all of these and it is clear that the subject would be much the poorer (an understatement) without them.

You were completely out of order to suggest that the first of these is "crap". Also, Stewart Evans has been kind enough to reply to correspondence from me regarding half-baked, cockamamie theories and has offered sage and polite advice. Cleary he is a gentleman.

Having said that, yours is a handsome apology and I hope some patching up can occur. Life's too short to be bickering and spitting ones dummy out.

    Best wishes,
    Steve.

Your own contributions have been extremely impressive and memorable, Jon.

Your excellent podcasts have been the highlight of my Casebook membership.

I certainly hope you'll stick around.

Hi Jon. No sense cutting off your nose to spite your face. Posting this proves you're a man, and anything can be overcome.

        Yours truly,

        Tom Wescott

Soon it'll be just yourself and Trevor Marriot left chatting on these forums. Good luck with that.

                  I agree.

Jon, I've always respected you and your contributions, and I respect the fact that you have had the grace to post this apology.

Take a little break if you need to, but do please stay. I'm sure you have much more to contribute to Casebook in the future.

                  Sincerely,

Yep, bad days, weeks, hair days, can do it every time, and it's easy to hit raw nerves, especially when one cares, but if Stewart and I can bury the hatchet somewhere other than in each other's head then I have no doubt that you and Stewart can and should. Dear lord, we've seen a fair few trouble-makers around here, but we can't have the good guys falling out like this; I mean, it's like having Randolph Scott and John Wayne on opposite sides - it doesn't bear thinking about. If the good guys keep leaving this asylum then there will be nobody left running it except the inmates.

Jonathan, thank you very much for that, a very brave thing to say and it restores my faith in you as the man I thought you were and my own ability to recognise a true aficionado of the subject who has contributed immeasurably with his fabulous and well-received podcasts.

We have had a long and friendly relationship with, as I recall, never a cross word. I can live with people disagreeing with the premise of my first book, which is only to be expected. I also have to live with the fact that, over the years, it has been rapidly rendered in need of an overhaul and revision. But, believe me, when Paul Gainey and I wrote it we did it in all good faith and using all the material we had found at that time on Tumblety. I was pleased to get away from a specific suspect after 1996 and concentrate on objectivity and research on my subsequent books. And, yes, the book obviously had suspect bias, as do all suspect books.

I do not know your reason for the recent exchanges we have had, but I am sure that there are reasons and that you felt justified in what you said. Any author has to accept criticism and 'attacks' on his books, that is the way of things and I have dished out my opinion of other books in the past as well as having my own attacked. An author has to live with it. Many people have advised me privately to stay away from the boards and the sometimes heated debate that goes on and that may well be good advice. My problem is that I don't regard myself as an author but as more of an enthusiast who enjoys debating things. I'm going to have to try hard to follow their advice.

I feel that the field has lost a great asset if we are not going to hear any more podcasts and you have a true gift for interviewing and questioning people. It is a sad day if you are leaving.

Hey Paul, what if you and I throw our respective rattles out of our prams and start on each other again, maybe this episode will be forgotten. On second thoughts I don't think that's a good idea.

I'm a sucker for an apology. When people genuinely give an apology and it is accepted that should be the end of it.

Jon I doubt you understand the impact you have had on the JtR community, me personally your contribution to the production of Rippercast is immense.

As someone who has done something similar on another site about a totally different subject I know how others can rely on contributions such as Rippercast.

Please don't "throw the toys out the pram" talk to Stewart and sort it out like men over a (virtual if need be) pint.

                            Jon,

I shant comment on your apology simply as I'm of the opinion that its a matter between Stewart and yourself.

I will comment that your contribution in bringing the subject into the Podcast age is massive. You have bought new faces to the subject and sparked interests which will only help progress the study.

I hope you reconsider as we need people such as yourself.

Take it from a newb who has contributed absulutely nothing to this subject-its your contributions, Stewarts and others on this board that is the reason I know about anything of substance about this fascinating mystery.
                              Please stay.
