  • R.I.P. Nancy Wake

    Hey all,

Was saddened yesterday to hear of the passing of Nancy Wake in London, at the ripe old age of 98.

Nancy was for a long time the most wanted woman on the Gestapo's list during World War II, dubbed "The White Mouse" and assistant in the survival and escape of thousands of Allied troops in German occupied France, but nobody could ever catch her.

Best of all, she was an Australian.

    R.I.P. Nancy.

    Cheers,
    Adam.

      True

I remember bumping in to her once in London, it was long ago in some Services club if I remember rightly. I held the door open for her, a jolly, plump sort of lady with a twinkling eye - everyone's ideal grandmother.

The chap with me asked what I thought of her - rather a strange question to ask me about a complete stranger. I said something about a favourite aunt or granny and he laughed. "That little old lady snapped the neck of an SS trooper with her bare hands".

God rest you Nancy Wake - a true heroine.

I believe she was Prince Charles's favourite.

My grandparents told me about Nancy when I was a kid. She's a national hero to generations and it's sad to hear about her passing.

98 was a good innings, though.

Bless you, Nancy Wake. And show 'em what's what upstairs.

A timely reminder as well that the World War II generation is not getting any younger. She is a genuine national hero and has received all of the awards to show it - if anything it's a shame she didn't receive them earlier. And she was as fiesty as ever even in her old age.

Incidentally, saw an article not long ago which was an interview with Vera Lynn, believe she's still going alright at age 93 or 94.

Built 'em tough in those days

            Cheers,
            Adam.

I didn't know about Nancy Wake, but I'm pleased to discover her now. What an impressive woman! There's a lot of video to explore on YouTube, including a lot of interview footage. You can see that twinkle.

                  Documentary: 'The White Mouse'

I didn't know much about 'The White Mouse' until after she died, which is a shame.

But I've watched a couple of documentaries on Nancy Wake in the past week, and wanted to let you all know there's a very good 2-part documentary about her
called ''Kiwis At War: The White Mouse." (link is below) It has interviews with Nancy, WWII footage, and recreations of her exploits.

I learned a lot from it, and admire her very much. Snoo is right, you really can see that twinkle in her eye!

There's also an older one from 1987 called "Codename: The White Mouse" that will come up in Related Videos.

                  Best regards,

Incidentally, the film "Charlotte Gray" was also somewhat based on the wartime events in the life of Nancy Wake.

                    Cheers,
                    Adam.
