  • Oslo bomb and Utøya shooting

    Hello all,

Here is the latest info via a press conf with the PM and the Minister of Justice.. the police will speak at a press conf as I write.

Bombing:- 7 dead, many injured, quantity unsure, 10 badly injured. 4 of the dead identified, 3 unidentified.

Shooting;-10 dead, some missing still, many injured (but see below)

The police have arrested a man (not sure if he was shot at and injured as well), he is 32 years old, Norwegian. Also, they have said..

There is a belief that there is a strong possibility of at least one undetonated bomb on the island, and there are searches also going on in the waters of the fjord, after missing persons. The amount of dead from the island shooting will "probably rise" according to the police.

EDIT They have FOUND undetonated explosives on the island.

There was no comment as to any connection to any group, but there is an indication that police are after other people that may or may not be connected. They neither confirm or deny he is a known criminal of the police either.

There is STRONG reason to believe that he is the same person seen outside the building in Oslo shortly before the bomb, dressed as a policeman, which is the description of the man on the island. They confirm that an automatic weapon used.

    .................................................. .................................................. ............
From the Press... The ferry man who transported the man to the island was told by the man that "his visit to the island was in connection with checks because of the bomb in Oslo", and he was carrying both a machine gun and a pistol. This is via the press as well in an interview on TV with one who was on the island.

Apparently the man played "Pied Piper" and attracted the youngsters to him(dressed as a policeman) with reassurance about Oslo bomb, etc then just opened fire on them. People on the island ran to the water, jumped through windows etc when the shooting started.
    .................................................. .................................................. ............

The whole of Norway is in shock. Oslo is totally closed down. All clubs, bars and nightclubs closed. All shops etc.
Down town in my town, 90 mins from Oslo, is as quiet as a church.
Gardemoen airport, north of Oslo, is closed and all borders are under strict security.

On a personal front, thank you all who have contacted me one way or another, asked after me and my family. With the exception of a few friends that may be abroad, I can say that every friend I know of in Oslo is safe.
Those working in Oslo near the explosion, are safe.
My sincerest thanks and kindest wishes to you all.

It is one of the most awful days of my life, and some of the stories from some of the parents are very very saddening. Absolutely everyone is in shock.

Nothing like this was expected in little Norway, with a population of only 4.5 million.

have a peaceful, respectful evening all

    kindest thoughts

    Phil

PS there are phone lines down and clogged up in this area, (south of Norway). Police are asking people NOT to use the phone unless they must, same with all skype lines out of Norway, as people are trying to ring in from all over the world.

        Update

        Hi everyone.

The death toll from the shooting at the youth summer camp has been raised to an absolutely horrific number- at least 80 confirmed dead.

        God bless those poor kids.

This NY Times article says the killer, a Norwegian man, has been identified as "right-wing". It appears he might also be the culprit behind the Oslo bombings.

What a crazy world we live in.

        Best regards,
        Archaic

          To all,

As Archaic has sadly pointed out.

It has been announced by the police, that the total of youngsters slaughtered on the Island of Utøya is at least 80.

Be aware that the total may rise even higher, and "tens" of others have been injured and taken to different hospitals, and the final count of combined dead and injured is far from final. Police are still combing the waters of the fjord.

This terrible tragedy has been described by the police, as a catastrophe.
There are indication the killer if acting alone, went from tent to tent and murdered these youngsters in cold blood, some hiding in their tents, some as they tried to swim away to safety. .

Norway, normally a laid back race of people, proud of never having any need of heavy security, is waking up today to a sad new dawn.

Murder is a relatively rare event in Norway. Nothing remotely like this has ever happened before. No death toll of murder like this since World War 2.

We are all stunned here. It seems unreal. The word "Quisling" is in the air.

The pretty little island in the Oslo fjord is a scene of a total, senseless massacre.

            Hi Phil

I am so glad you are safe. This is indeed the most terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the dead. I feel also for the people dealing with these events such as members of the emergency services.

This is a national tragedy for Norway. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Yes that really sucks big time. friends were playing some gigs in Norway and Oslo was supposed to be yesterday, it got cancelled. and we still haven't heard of a friend who lives in Oslo. it's very striking it's not the style up there, the people are always so polite and quiet and reserved. While in some countries it's almost "casualty", for them it is really a trauma, and it will definitekly remain in their mind for decades. Now let's see how the national socialist dødsmetal *******s handle this one!! they'll be pretty much huging the walls to my greatest satisfaction, and I hope a lot of them will get their faces smashed in too!

that word never ceased to be in the air, even in Sweden. I guess that would be appropriate, though still weak.

                  Dear Norway,

Welcome to the world. I wish like hell you could have stayed out of it. You're going to overreact after this first one. And that's okay, as long as you admit your mistakes and dial back as needed. You want to be different than the rest of us. You want to find a way to secure your citizens without curtailing their rights. I wish you the best, but expect somewhat less. You'll get through. Sorry again. You don't deserve this.

It appears Anders Breivik is a right-wing fundamentalist Christian.

So true, Julie. It rips the heart out. I think it's more than a national tragedy. It's a tragedy for all of us who care about people.

                        Death Toll Rises

As you may have heard, the death toll from the shooting at the youth camp now stands at 92.

Playing dead did not save victims of the massacre at youth camp as killer calmly executed those showing signs of life

I cannot fathom how one man could wish to kill so many people- and worst of all, why he would choose to target kids.

What a loathsome and despicable coward! He has absolutely no right to call himself a Christian. I think he's in for a big surprise when he exits this world.

                        Best regards,

                          Questions.

I'm a bit puzzled here. Normally in any type of mass shooting you have about five wounded to every person killed.

Were there any wounded on the island?

                            Hi Bob.

Apparently the killer was very deliberate and methodical. He went around to all the wounded and those who were lying on the ground "playing dead", and shot them again, many in the head. The details are in the Guardian article that I posted above.

                            Best regards,

I'm hoping that this is a lone nutter without any organization behind him. As to why he did it, the mind can only boggle.
