The Victorians on TV Tonight

BBC 2 - 10 pm (GMT) The Victorians tonight Wednesday April 13 2011

Jeremy Paxman explores how the era's artists portrayed domestic life, and contrasts paintings of pampered middle-class children with those depicting the poor. He also investigates sexual double standards, discovers some of the bizarre ways in which desires were kept in check, and visits an anatomy museum containing waxwork replicas of flesh diseased by syphilis.
The programme doesn't discuss JtR but it does take an in depth look at Victorian society. It might be of interest to some.

Don't get the BBC down here unfortunately, but it sounds like a very interesting show.

The final episode of "Turn Back Time: The High Street" airs tonight as well, for anybody who can get it - basically the premise is that a group of shop owners like the baker, butcher, grocer, etc, take their business back in time and run it exactly as it would have been run in certain decades and eras, using only products available then, etc. They started out in the Victorian era and have now worked their way through to the 1970's. The difference a century makes is just unimaginable.

That's a pity you don't get The Victorians. It turns out it's a series which started over a month ago, so will be on again next week. No doubt it will reach where you are if the BBC can flog it to other countries.
The advertising blurb I put in the original post above (copied from BBC website advertising the show) was incorrect. Paxmann only got as far as 1840s and 1850s so I suppose next week, it will cover closer to the JtR era. It is easy to forget that Queen Victoria's reign extended from mid 19th to early 20th century.
The BBC also ran a series a few years back on life in Victorian times - What the Victorians did for us (sounds similar to Turn Back Time) which was fascinating and I think is now available on DVD box set.
Last night's show The Victorians did deal with a woman serial killer who took on other people's babies for a small fee. She then killed the babies - 50 in total but that's only an estimate, it could have been more! Her name was Amelia Elizabeth Dyer née Hobley (1838 – June 10, 1896). Had never heard of her. Shocking. So she was way ahead of Jack the Ripper' time.

Will tune in to The Victorians again next week - it is well worth it - and perhaps others who are lucky enough to get the BBC will do same.
Adam, have you tried getting the BBC on the internet? That might work. I think some programmes are free.

Im afraid they can. For instance the Daily Show with Jon Stewart is virtually impossible to watch online here in the UK(legally anyway).

There is a way round these things with a small free app but the name of the app escapes me.

Okay, I'm not a great computer tekkie and I don't have the special app you mention. Mind you, I'm in Ireland so maybe that's how I can access the BBC iplayer and have all the BBC channels on tv for free.
Would it be possible to trick the iplayer (in a legal way!) into thinking you're in Britain or Ireland by going to Google.ie (that's the Irish search engine) OR Google.co.uk (British search engine) and entering in the address for the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...me_Sweet_Home/ and see if that works??? Have a go at that and get back if it works!!!

Hi Siobhan,

Many thanks for the information and the links - unfortunately I have limited bandwith down here so I have to be careful how much I download or else it goes over the limit and then i'm stuck with dial-up speed internet for the rest of the month.

I have satellite TV and strangely enough, it has programs and channels like BBC Knowledge and BBC News, along with BBC programs like Top Gear, but not the full BBC itself.....hopefully it's not far away.

There's been numerous programs, especially in recent years which deal with life in the Victorian era! There was also Victorian Farm / Victorian Christmas going back a while ago....fantastic to see.
