Good news everyone, I gave her my number tonight and asked what she was doing this weekend. She said she had to work until Sunday but that we would do something Monday or Tuesday. This looks good

Adam (and his articles) are a bucket of laughs. (Particularly the one about the Princess Alice tragedy.) For a minute out there I thought he was younger than me. Grrr...

Originally posted by mariabIs this a joke or do you mean 1988? Adam cannot be younger than Corey, and it would be quite a bit ingenious to have written several articles by the age of 13.

Actually I'm doing 2 books too, in my own field (of musicology). First book manuscript still needs a bit of polishing after the editor's comments, and the second book is in the structuring phase. Technically it's actually 3 books, as the first book is gonna get made into an American, slightly different version. Just the thought of it all makes me wanna run and hide under the bedcovers.
Anyway, the best of lucks with both books and many more articles.

I'm not sure I or Dave or anyone are really 'proto' anything since we were all born almost a century after the Ripper murders, although I understand what you're saying. Adam Went was born in 1998.
My book will by no means be a monography of the Berner Street murder, although that had been my intention pre-Le Grand. In recent years I've wrestled over the matter, because I'd really like to do one, but instead I'm going to do my suspect book, followed by a monograph on socialist/anarchism and the Ripper murders. Between the two, I'll have said most of what I want to say on the matter, the rest I can say in essays, which are what I really enjoy writing.
Yours truly,
Tom Wescott

Adam is a newbie compared to Tom (why do I sense a left hook coming over from Down Under, one of these days?), so, while we're at it, let's say that Tom is a “ProtoBernerStreetian“ and Adam, Lynn Cates, and myself are “early BernerStreetians“, and I would consider Berner Street established as a sub-field of Ripperology after the first really serious monography on the subject is published (that would be Tom's book, currently in preparation). I still consider Gavin Bromley to be a “Pre-BernerStreetian“ of much more output and importance than David Yost, even comparing Bromley's article to Yost's book.
Now, what all this has to do with the price of rice in China and with Jordan's dilemma with the waitress lady is another matter.
PS.: Ollson's not bad for Stride's earlier life in Sweden.

I'm not at all sure how Adam Went would be 'proto', since his first publication on Stride occurred within in the last year. To my knowledge, the only writers who have made any kind of special study of the Berner Street case with multiple publications on the case are myself and Yost. A fellow named Ollson from Sweden has made a very careful study of Stride's early life in Sweden and published many fantastic articles in Ripperologist, although he doesn't appear all that interested in the goings-on in Berner Street. It is my sincere hope that we DO see more people become interested in the case, particularly those with a bent towards researching certain individuals and side matters that could only add to our overall understanding of the people involved.
Yours truly,
Tom Wescott

Right, I forgot Dave Yost, whose book I read lately (online) and was not impressed. The real great pre-BernerStreetians would be Gavin Bromley and Eduardo Zinna, whose old, print era Rip article on Philip Krantz I can't wait to read, if I ever manage to get my hands on it.
You, Tom, and our mate (pronounced “mite“) from Down Under would be the “Proto-BernerStreetians“. (While Adam's resistance to see the evidence in all things Packer constitutes a bit of a strange phenomenon, which kinda bothers me. ;-))

Originally posted by mariabYou're sooo correct!
By the way, with the “BernerStreetian“ label I wasn't entirely correct. It would be more accurate to say that there are 2 current “Proto-BernerStreetians“ out there, which resulted into the “formation“ of 2 “early BernerStreetians“ (Lynn Cates and myself). In the strict sense of the term, Gavin Bromley and Edoardo Zinna can be considered as “Pre-BernerStreetians“. Just compare this to the Pre-Raphaelites...

Tom Wescott

It's always good to get the 411 before getting all wrapped up. People might be together, but be discreet about it.
