Well, we’ve already lost Borough Market and all the Grade II listed buildings around it to modern development and now it looks as if Greenwich Market will suffer the same fate.

The go ahead for the redevelopment has finally been given the go-ahead, despite the fact that A). The public detested the modern make-over, B). The local council rejected the application on the grounds that it was totally out of keeping with the history and architecture of Greenwich town centre and because it simply was not of a sufficiently high standard for a World Heritage Site. The planning inspectorate then overturned the decision after an appeal.

Unfortunately this is happening all over London. The individual character of London as typified by its street markets is being destroyed. Our famous antique markets are being eroded and replaced by chain stores. Camden passage is a shadow of its former self, both ends sold to clothing stores, Antiquarius to be replaced by an american chainstore[ [yes Americans come here to buy american clothes not antiques] Portobello Rd is slowly vanishing under chain shops and tourist muck. Govenments hate markets because they are unregulated and market traders can't be put in boxes, also they hate the idea of so much prime land being wasted on little people when it could be making vast profits for all their business buddies.

PS Greenwich is a lovely mixed market selling all sorts of interesting stuff.
