  • The Armchair Detectives Guide

Here is brief description of a interesting term which is currently fashionable in psychology that is perhaps pertinent to Ripperology.
Cognitive Dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by the presence of conflicting cognitions, a cognition being is a concept that may or may not be established in our own minds. This theory proposes that we possess a motivational drive to reduce dissonance whenever encountered by achieving consonance. Attitude change when confronted with a conflicting cognition is a possible way of reducing dissonance, but people may work on the conflicting cognition in various ways;for example, they might belittle or ignore evidence, seek out and only associate with those who hold with there conceptual view.
This is a very thin outline of Cognitive Dissonance Theory, but there is lots of meatier yet accessable material on it.
Applicable to Ripperologists do you think?.

Absolutely. For application see John Malcolm's piece in the latest Casebook Examiner, or any post by banned Casebooker, Perry Mason.
