Adrian Morris recently printed this in the Journal of the Whitechapel Society:


"RIPPERRENO 2011"

We received some interesting news from a regular
contributor that many readers are familiar with. San
Francisco based writer and researcher, Joe Chetcuti has told
us about a rather unusual, but intriguing event that will be
taking place in the Sierra Nevada Mountains next year.

Joe and his friends, who some of you may know; Roger
Palmer, Scott Nelson and Simon and Susan Wood will be
renting out a cabin over the U.S. Memorial Day holiday
weekend at the end of May 2011. This will be just thirty
minutes drive away from the casinos in Reno, Nevada.

This will be no ordinary weekend, with such a
speculation of Ripperologists in one place one could almost
imagine that it could pass for an ad hoc mini U.S. Ripper
conference. So much so that Simon Wood has monikered the
event; RipperReno. And, in a way, it will be significant - for
this grouping have decided to conduct a number of phone
calls to respected figures in the Ripper world including the
Whitechapel Society.

We can only wish them happy holidays, hope they don't
get drilled, filled and papered over on the casino tables, and
await their phone call with much anticipation.


It sounds like they are planning to have quite an intelligence summit meeting up there in the mountains! But I was able to get a clearer perspective on things after Joe sent me this e-mail today:

"Well actually Mike, while we're up at the cabin we'll be spending most of our time placing hot dogs on the barbecue and drinking down Scott Nelson's home-made brew. Then when it turns 3am in London, we'll probably wake up Robert Linford with one of our phone calls! Then on Sunday and Monday, we could hit Harrah's Casino. Rumor has it, Mr. & Mrs. Wood are sharp shooters at the dice table."

Group of Ripperologists? Cutlery?

Hi all,

Joe has asked me to pass this on:

On behalf of Roger and myself, we'd like to thank all the Ripperologists who graciously received our phone calls this past weekend. (The calls were made from a very snowy mountain cabin!) It was a delight to talk with Jane, Norma, Adrian, Robert, Mike, Don, Simon, Chris George, and Chris Scott on Saturday.

Due to telephone difficulty, we weren't able to get our Saturday phone call through to Spain. But fortunately, I was successful getting it through the next day, and I ended up having a very pleasant Sunday chat with Eduardo Zinna. Ripperology is fortunate to have such a talented man like Eduardo in its field. He is an excellent editor and a superb translator.

Verbal communication is so much different than e-mail contact. It is always a pleasure to share enthusiasm and mutual support over a telephone line, especially when doing so with fellow colleagues. This was an experience I will happily remember, and I know Roger feels the same way about it.

The biggest tug-of-war Roger and I had in regards to the phone receiver occurred when Chris Scott was on the line! We didn't have a speaker-phone, and both of us wanted to hear every word Chris was saying. His retention of knowledge is remarkable.

Robert Linford won the award for making us laugh the most, and the best accent award went to Adrian. You two will be receiving trophies from us in the mail shortly!

And as expected, the Norma-Roger conversation flowed like champagne!

It was a very great pleasure to talk to you and Roger on Saturday. You were so polite, you didn't even reverse the charges, which was nice.

How did the roulette go? Did you put Roger's manuscript on red, like I told you?

Obviously I didn't speak in a sufficiently comic Liverpudlian accent to receive notice.

Nonetheless, as I anticipated, it was a great pleasure to speak to you, Joe and Roger, at your lair in the High Sierras if relatively briefly.

Eduardo tells me that at the moment he spoke to Joe, Roger was off trying to extricate his car from the snow (!) -- here in Baltimore at present it is in the sweaty nineties.... ugh.

I was so happy to get your call on Saturday. It must have been the best planned operation since D Day. it's a shame that our real phone was being fixed and we were using one of Graham Bell's cast offs, so you sounded as if you were calling from a Mars landing vehicle. Lol. It was still lovely to talk to you.

Don't tell anyone, but you and Roger have got the scrummiest accents. I know I sound like Eliza Dolittles senile grandmother, but don't tell anyone that either!

I hope you had a really good weekend anyway, and got back home safe.
