"Grasshopper, how is it that you do not?"

    Greetings, honourable Big Pud,

I see that you have already travelled far along the torturous road to true enlightenment, (A1M North. Next services Pontefract 23m). Your knowledge of English Literature is most impressive and is exceeded only by your skills in the art of Flung Fu, the ancient art of being able to batter your opponent at a distance well beyond hand to hand combat range!

    Best wishes,

    Zodiac.

P.S. "When you can take the pork pie from my hand, grasshopper, then you will be ready!!!

    Hi Steven,

Thanks for filling me in. Sounds like Cumberbatch is quite true to the original Holmes stories, he almost acts as if he does have a bit of Aspberger's or something similar.

Just my opinion of course. Sorry you can't get the show Down Under. Perhaps as a Commonwealth subject you should write to the Queen and complain.

I'm sure Her Majesty would be devastated by the news, and I may well consider doing as you suggest. Mind you, we do get the new series of Top Gear down here, which I love.....perhaps when I write to her about Sherlock, I should also ask her why Jeremy Clarkson is not yet Sir Jeremy Clarkson?

    Cheers,
    Adam.

    TJ,
No, I didn't know any of those things! Oh, well. Time marches on and all that and I suppose J. Deaver can write what he likes.

    Adam,
I think Cumberbatch is very good as the modern Holmes. I suppose he plays him as if he had a touch of Asperger's: able to focus on minute detail and so on. Also, his Holmes seems able to understand emotions in connection with motives but is awkward about showing affection. He doesn't care much about offending people and doesn't always realise or even understand when he has. Of course, intellectually he is streets ahead of all those around him as every good Holmes should be (bar Michael Caine perhaps). Cumberbatch has added some Brettish quirkiness to his Holmes and I think his look is right for the role.

Just my opinion of course. Sorry you can't get the show Down Under. Perhaps as a Commonwealth subject you should write to the Queen and complain.

    Best wishes,
    Steve.

    Hi Stephen

I live just near there, did you know Brierton has closed down now?
They are fighting to keep Rossmere open.

Jeffery Deaver added Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson to one of his short stories, the criminal actually got the better of them.

    Dear tji,
Hello. I was born in Middlesbrough (then part of Yorkshire), lived in Stockton, then moved to Hartlepool at age two and stayed there till eighteen so yes, I do consider myself a Hartlepudlian. I went to school at Rossmere and Brierton. Hope you are well.

    Best wishes,
    Steve.

    Hi Adam

    Steven:

Baritsu/Bartitsu sounds like a fantastic idea! I just hope that our Hartlepudlian members (Tracy Ianson, if you see this topic, look away now!) don't see your comments....

Not to worry Adam, I would be indignant, but he actually went easy on them.
Least he kept his comments to the men, the less said about the women the better. lol.

Of course I am just an exception to the rule, sophisticated, polite, well educated....ok I can't go on, Nigel is laughing so much, he is going to pass out.

    Steven

It was a French sailor I tell you, a French sailor!!!!!

So are you originally from Hartlepool?

    Tj

ps (Yes we would prefer to hang a French Sailor to a monkey )

Heh....the way you describe Hartlepool sounds very familiar.

Dammit! Everybody talks about this new Sherlock series and I don't get to see it down here......how does this Cumberbatch fellow portray Holmes as opposed to Robert Downey Jnr., Basil Rathbone, Michael Caine, etc?

    Cheers,
    Adam.

Don't worry, Adam. I'm sure my fellow monkey hangers can take a joke.

I like the outlook of Yorkshire folk. Scargill once said something like "Yes, people do say I'm very competitive. But that's them competing with me, mind - not me competing with them."

It's astonishing to see the change in opinion from forum to forum. I feel i'm very much fighting a lone battle over on Encyclopaedia Titanica, as their members (which, I might add, have regular contributors which could easily be counted on one hand) are constantly moving away from the point of the many, many great things Doyle did and wrote, to argue things such as his being a concentration camp apologist, and other such opinions which could only be attributed to extremely mis-informed, ill-educated people (see "dislikeable". )

Not to worry, I'll just continue to baffle them by using words which are more than six letters long.

The "disageeable" Mr Kalafus, of unhappy memory, deserves be treated to a thorough lesson in "Baritsu", also known as "Bartitsu", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartitsu of which I have gained some little knowledge, and which has proved to be most efficatious in its practical application. Of course, being born and raised a proud Yorkshireman, I was already well versed in the ancient northern martial art of Ecky Thump, though the most lethal nature of this hidden art quite forbids its use in all but the most grave of circumstances! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuP1e...eature=related
