  • Hi Zodiac

Yes, Wendy went on to a major part in AYBS.

I found out recently that the "don't like it up 'em" line was used in "Bootsie and Snudge" which was a programme I used to watch but have since almost totally forgotten. Clive Dunn played an old man in that too, and apparently he used to say that line.

Also, in "Whiskey Galore" there's a scene where the Home Guard are building a roadblock on the Scottish island the film is set on. The sergeant says "Hang on, sir. What if the Germans come the other way round?" and the captain (played by Basil Radford) says "I was wondering who'd spot that."

    • There's often re-runs of it on TV down here.....I remember watching an episode once where Gorden Kaye played a cameo role, he of course went on to play Rene in "Allo' Allo'"......and I think Frank Thornton (Peacock) is still kicking and does occasional guest spots on "Last Of The Summer Wine", right?

Anyway, Arthur Conan Doyle is better than George Bernard Shaw....."and I am unanimous in that!"

      Cheers,
      Adam.

      • Hi Adam

I know that Carmen Silvera, who played Rene's wife Edith, appeared in one episode of Dad's Army as a woman whom Mainwaring falls in love with, and almost runs away with.

I'm not sure whether Frank Thornton is still in LOTSW, as I've lost touch with it. I think they're cancelling it after the next series.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't seen any of Dad's Army......unless you count the newspaper headlines and posters that were floating around in your neck of the woods just before the '06/'07 Ashes series started.....backfired much?

          Cheers,
          Adam.

          • Hi all

Yep after 37 years they are pulling the plug on lotsw. It has been the longest ever tv series, not sure if that is in the Uk or all over.

            • Oh, you'd like it, Adam. It's about a Home Guard platoon run by a self-important lower middle-class bank manager with an upper-class man for his sergeant and an old boy who served under Kitchener as his number three, plus other characters.

Just for you Adam, here is a little of what you've been missing.

                "Now pay attention men"...

                • Hey Robert & Zodiac,

Thanks for the links, Zodiac, but unfortunately my neither my programs nor my internet connection are up to date enough to watch Youtube clips. What i'll do though is go to the video shop and hire out a Dad's Army DVD or two, and see how it goes. Sounds a little like the last series of Blackadder actually....speaking of, there's another great show!

                  Cheers,
                  Adam.

                    Hi Adam,

Sorry mate, I didn't realise that you couldn't get Youtube. Yes, hiring one of the DVD's is a good idea. It was written by David Croft who co wrote "Are you being served?" and 'Allo 'Allo! And Jimmy Perry. They also wrote "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" and " Hi-de-Hi!"

Sorry about your internet connection etc. You realise that I'm now picturing you as living in the middle of the outback... Where all those backpackers go missing... Adam, your not that bloke off "Wolf Creek" are you????

                    Best wishes,

                    Zodiac.

                    P.S. Blackadder is comedy GOLD!!!!

                    • Zodiac:

LOL no it's not quite that bad, I have broadband but it has limits and sites like Youtube use it up quicksmart, then i'm back to dial-up....like now... so I don't bother with it.

Anyway, in return for my watching Dad's Army, I think you and Robert and everybody else should Youtube (or hire DVD's, if you can get them there) of an Australian show..... Hey Hey It's Saturday. Get the 80's/early 90's episodes if you can, extremely funny stuff, you'll love it. Great story as well....show originally ran from 1971 - 1999, then a decade later, on the back of a Facebook campaign which is now well over half a million members strong, the show has made a comeback! Original cast and all....it just completed its first season and will be back for a second in October. Proof that miracles do happen.....

                      Cheers,
                      Adam.

                      • Lestrade

Last of the Summer Wine - good riddance.

Back to Holmes: Doyle is not clear on the pronunciation of "Lestrade". I like to rhyme it with laid rather than lard but this is just my preference. Anyone ever come across anyone else with this surname and if so, how is it pronounced?

                        Best wishes,
                        Steve.

I kind of naturally rhymed it with 'laid'.

And what, I wonder again, was his first name...?

Martin Dakin thought 'Gregory', but don't suppose he knew why, either.
He was played by Colin Jeavons in the Jeremy Brett series, but not my idea of what Lestrade looked like.

Martin Dakin also suggested that John Watson had been shot in the arse in Afghanistan.

                              • Graham, just going from fuzzy memory, but that scene where Holmes reads Watson's mind : doesn't Watson put his hand to his old army wound and smile?
