Some of my favorite war films are Stalingrad and Enemy at the Gates as well as Ryan and Tora.

Pearl Harbor was puerile nonsense, and not a patch on Tora, Tora, Tora!.

I wasn't impressed with the Aviator either, it just seemed to scratch the surface rather than dissect it!
That said I enjoyed DiCaprio and Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can, which is an easy going, well crafted movie, which features a cautionary tale, "Don't trust DiCaprio"
My son has a thing about war films at the moment, so rather than show him the rose tinted movies I thought I would throw him in at the deep end with Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, and Pearl Harbor.

Hi Jane
Yes I’ve seen Pans Labyrinth, but some time ago. A very good film I shall re -visit it as recommended…trust you are well!
I watched the AVIATOR tonight. While being a big admirer of Leonardo DiCaprioI I thought the film didn’t get inside the MAN..
But then I’m a big fan/enthusiast of Howard Hues and his strange life…can you believe that he survived three air crashes!
Some of us are never satisfied…
Sweet dreams all

Pans Labrynth is an excellent, if dark and difficult to watch, movie!

A couple of months ago the Sunday Times gave away a DVD of 'Cabaret', which I hadn't seen for a good 20 years. This has to be one of the greatest films about music (as opposed to a musical) ever made, and although I'm rather cynical about such self-laudatory matters, Liza Minelli was a deserving Oscar winner. Joel Gray as the MC was (disturbingly) brilliant, too. The scene in which the (supposed) Nazi youth-anthem 'Tomorrow Belongs To Me' is for me one of the most chilling in modern cinema. And I mean chilling....I knew the version by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band before I understood what it was all about....
I lent the sodding DVD to a 'friend' (yeah?) who proceeded to bloody-well lose it...
Cheers,
Graham

Yes, I'd like to see that
I keep meaning to do it.
Have you seen Pan's Labyrinth, Pirate - that's an uncomfortable film to watch, and quite profound? Your comment about the futility of war brought it to mind, as I recently watched it. It's one of those films that stays with you long after it's finished.
Recommended.
Best wishes

Well if you guys are recommending films I guess I should stand up for; THE READER..
Thought provoking, if a little slow to start. Beautifully shot and great performances. Easily the best film of the year leaving Australia and Benjamin Button far behind.
It avoided the usual Nazi clichés and gave a small window on the futility of war..
The only film that I’ve watched the extra scenes and thought why did they cut them out?
Touched by humanity, highly recommended.

Yes, I agree, I Want To Believe wasn't upto much, I mean what was the point of Billy Connolly and the visions, when all the time we were looking for Russians with a two headed dog!
I am halfway through series 2 at the moment, and just watched the 3 parter where Scully is abducted, and X kills some bloke! All very exciting!

I used to love the X-Files..
I watched the movie 'I want to Believe' recently, though, and sadly wasn't very impressed.
I didn't understand the point of the plot - I mean, crazy Russian scientists? Why?
And I found it hard going. I know some people thought the old magic between Mulder and Scully was still there - I didn't even see that, to be honest.
Hard going for me, very disappointing.
On the other hand, I just watched 'The Colour of Magic', a two part adaptation of Pratchett's first two novels, and I did like that - I thought it was very enjoyable and a thoroughly decent effort. It was very well cast - David Jason and Sean Astin were inspired choices to play Rincewind and Twoflower. The show was entirely stolen by the Luggage imo, however - as in the books!
Best to all

I enjoyed The Triangle and like similar films.
I watched Prom Night recently with the wife. It was a recent re-imagining of another classic albeit cheesy horror (anyone who watched Leslie Nielson dancing in the original will be scarred for life)Anyway, the killer is revealed in the first 15 minutes, and there is little suspense, or horror. The death scenes are pretty boring, and the whole film was like an episode of the "Hills"
The cop seemed to be surrounded by cops, but whenever the killer arrived all the other cops seemed to be on a tea break!
Due to the lack of decent programs I have cracked open my X-Files collection and started at Series one...

The Triangle
I've just finished watching 'The Triangle' which, as you guess, is about the Bermuda Triangle, and is a three part mini-series (so not strictly a movie I suppose).
I don't know if anyone else has seen it? I think there are certain things you expect from a story about the Bermuda Triangle - but this one has none of them! At least not in the way you'd expect. That's why I think it was good.
It's worth a watch.

I watched 'Mamma Mia' recently to see what all the fuss was about - oh dear!

gosh i have watched a lot of films...
yes, Pan's Labyrinth was exceptional, very thought-provoking.
My Bloody Valentine is not normally my sort of film...i wasn't impressed with the initial acting, but some of the sticky ends were genius! It was also a good film for keeping you wondering until the resolution. The sort of horrors i cannot watch are those which include torture such as Saw and Hostel...i can cope with the more unrealistic stuff, but Hostel etc just sails to close to the edge of reality for me and makes me incredibly uncomfortable.
For a funny horror i would recommend Severence, with Danny Dyer and a fantastic performance from ex-Blackadder Tim McInnerny...very funny. I loved it! (There is even some eye candy in there for men)

I loved Stardust, great feel good movie.
I also enjoyed Pans Labrynth, not so feel good, but thought provoking.
This week I read Nicholas Pillegi's "Wiseguys" so I watched Casino, Goodfellas, and Donnie Brasco
We also recently watched My Bloody Valentine, which was OK, and One Missed Call, which made me fall asleep!
