Never heard of Leigh Smith, his ship disaster, but successfully keeping all members of his crew alive and conducting important research into Franz Josef Land. It was a better ending to an Arctic investigation than the two contemporary U.S. expeditions of "The Jeanette" (1879 - 1881) and the "Greeley Expedition of 1882 - 1884). And the next time anything left Spitzbergen (that I know of) was the 1897 aerial (balloon) voyage of Salamon Andree and his two companions, that failed and ended in total tragedy (though not specifically discovered until the remains of the three men and their camp were found on White Island in 1930).Originally posted by Robert View Post
