    R.I.P Sir Roger Bannister

Died at the age of 88.

The first man to achieve a sub-four minute mile in 1954. A feat thought impossible at the time.

Just had a conversation with my dad:

Me: “Sir Roger Bannister has died.”

    Dad: “Has he?”

    Me: “Yes. Aged 88.”

Dad: “ He examined my feet once.”

    Me: “What??”

Roger Bannister was a Doctor. My Dad was off on National Service to Aden in around 1957/8. Bannister was checking soldiers feet.

I didn’t know that his record only stood for 46 days. It was beaten by Australian John Landy.

Sir Roger was a sporting legend. R.I.P.

And Landry did it in a fair dinkum race Bannister used pace men.

There are two ways to be fooled, one is to believe what isn't true, the other is to refuse to believe that which is true.

Ohhh and that wasn’t meant to take anything away from his achievement.

His record lasted just 46 days. He was awfully upper-clarse......

.....whoops, sorry, just saw that this has already been mentioned. Nevertheless, he was still awfully upper clarse and not my type at all....

The current world record is 3:43.13.

It’s amazing to think that if Bannister (or Landy) had raced Hicham El Guerrouj HEJ would have been on his way to the shower by the time they crossed the line!

                    R.I.P. Roger

I remember seeing him cross the finish line in the movie newsreels at the theater in 1954-he looked exhausted.
This my opinion and to the best of my knowledge, that is, if I'm not joking.

It is interesting that if everybody agrees that something can't be done (i.e., a sub four minute mile) and then it is done then nobody can make that argument anymore. Ripperologists should take heed.

A very rough calculation shows that the time has gone down by an average of 0.25 seconds per year (note AVERAGE). Suppose a similar average is maintained in future : obviously there will come a time when no one can run any quicker.
