  • Top 5 British invasion bands

This is a thread inspired by Pop star mannerisms...

"makes me want to start a new list.....rate your top 5 British Invasion bands in order.... I will allow the 1st and 2nd waves (just so The Who can be included )

    mine are
5- Herman's Hermits - laugh if you will...but great pop, plus.. they brought the WHO to America!!

4- Donovan- Usually not thought of in this respect, but I include him...

3- The Kinks- everything you could ever want from a band....pop sense, rebellion, angst, emotion and longevity... plus 2 brothers who would fight!

2- The Beatles- I know, seems almost sacrilegious to not have The Beatles #1... but it was a coin toss for me

1- The Who- All I can say is the Greatest Rock-n-Roll band of ALL TIME (sorry Stones)..

Anyone else care to comment or add a list?

5-The Yardbirds-as the proto Led Zepplin, the promise of what more was to come.

    4-The Who-innovative and great live.

3-The Kinks-the inventors of hard rock and grossy underrated.

2-The Rolling Stones-great then and with staying power like none other.

1-The Beatles-the biggest act ever and the one that made all the others possible.
This my opinion and to the best of my knowledge, that is, if I'm not joking.

I can live with either list.

I posted on the other thread though (mannerisms) about how one of them went to the top with Rock, Pop. Ballards, String Quartets and Orchestral backing, (even though they were made use a half orchestra and double track) I honestly can't think of anyone else who could cover so many genres.

Herman's Hermits had a lot of hits with some great catchy songs.

Pure pop music - and nothing wrong with that.

Peter Noone is still performing and making money. He has his own website. Seems like a nice guy.

Somebody mentioned Donovan. He was my pet hate. What a total drip and his songs were dire. The poor man's Bob Dylan.
        This is simply my opinion

I got to see Herman's Hermits live a few years ago, which was a great thrill to me. They were my favourites as a child, even moreso than the Beatles. My uncle Billy and I used to sit around singing 'Enery the Eighth with great relish when I was four or five or so. As a child does, I took them for part of the world, and imagined I'd go see them someday, never realizing that times would change. And then, so unexpectedly, I was walking past the Ohio Theatre, and the marquee was "Tonight Only! The Original Herman's Hermits!". I feel so blessed that I was able to have that happen to me.

And yes, Peter Noone seems a very nice person.

Funny, my daughter and I were singing 'Enery the 8th last night, after there was mention on TV about the Tudors.

Donovan was...and is amazing, I saw him a few years ago, great show!!

Peter Noone is great..I worked a couple of his shows years ago ( I use to be a guitar technician at a local concert venue in another life) and Peter Noone was one of the nicest people I ever worked with, very nice man, and was willing to stick around and meet any of the fans who wanted to meet him....Willie Nelson was the same way...but I could also tell some horror stories of some folks hahah....I miss that job, in the space of two years I got to jam with some real legends....Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, B B King (my hands were shaking so bad for that one I could hardly play my damn guitar) Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins ( he was a very funny guy, introduced himself to people by saying " Hello, I'm not Elvis" hahaha), Cheap Trick, David Gates,Robby Krieger, America...and so many others, (sound checks were fun for a 17/18 year old Steadmund!!!) even got to work a Ringo Starr show ( did not get to play with him sadly...but did meet him) other then the fact I didn't get paid much (30 dollars a day, and days could last 17 hours!!!) that was the best job ever!!!! Damnit, I'm going to dig out my old photo albums!!!

Man you have met some of the greats of music and sport.

Probably the most underrated drummer of all time Ringo. Changed the way drummers played, changed their position in the band and could beat out the same rhythm time and time again which made joining takes so much easier.

Come the 1970s and hit singles for the Hollies, Kinks, Manfreds and Hermits dried up. I've often wondered whether the mere turn of a decade has a negative effect on a band, with the band or their fans deciding that it's time to move to pastures new.

This bloke's been out of the charts for years :

The song "I'm Henery the Eighth, I Am," as performed by Harry Champion in 1911.

I used to own a record store in London which dealt solely in country music. The only purely country music store in Europe, so I was told. It was great while it lasted. It was also mail order and I used to import the music from the USA every single week. Then...the internet happened. Amazon were able to sell the CDs for less than I could so that was it.

Anyway, in the course of those 15 years I got to meet loads of country music stars. I was never into autographs but I've got loads of photos.

Yes, Willie Nelson was one of the nicest, so were Waylon and Jessie and Reba McEntire. Kristofferson was the biggest star I met and he was absolutely terrific with a great sense of humour. The most unpleasant ones were the lesser celebs who thought they were 'someone'. I won't name them (you may not have heard of them anyway). Now in obscurity where they rightly belong.

Getting back to good old pop music - does anyone remember Freddie and the Dreamers? They were good fun to watch and made some great records.
