He was carrying a white carrier bag by the top which had been rolled over
Whoever the man was seen by neighbours at 2.30 pm on 22nd August 1961 he appeared to them to be a stranger to the area.
He was carrying a white carrier bag which had been rolled over.
I want to draw attention to this carrier bag because when the handkerchief was examined which was laid on top of the ammunition under the back seat of the 36 bus [24/08/61]it was found to have blood stains on it which on closer examination turned out to be those of an animal .
Charlotte France's brother worked at Tomkins butchers in Hampstead Road and every Friday brought Charlotte and the family meat in a white carrier bag with Tomkins written on it.
Charlotte France made a statement to Acott and Oxford on 12 January 1962 in which she mentions the white carrier bags with Tomkins written on them used by her brother to carry butcher's meat to her house each Friday but claiming she knew nothing Louise Anderson's claim about any gun being kept in a rolled up white carrier bag at the very top of an airing cupboard in Charles France's house.
It appears to me that the gun found under the back seat of a 36 bus on August 24th was likely to have been the gun from the top shelf of the airing cupboard in Charles France's house and that leads me to conclude that France placed that gun on that bus that had been taken from a white carrier bag kept in his airing cupboard-a bag which would have had traces of animal blood on it which would have contaminated the hanky taken from the wash and placed on top of the gun-easy to do since the 36 bus passed his house in Boundary Road this in my opinion would have been done in order to get rid of a gun from his house equally as much as it would have been done to incriminate Hanratty. It had not been left in the bag of course because that would have pointed police back the Tomkins the butchers! However its possible France simply panicked at the thought of the police finding the gun on his property which would have been illegal possession and that the act was not necessarily to implicate Hanratty.
