By the way, Jack Boyle, the creator of Boston Blackie, took part in the investigation of the Villisca Axe Murders (http://www.villiscaiowa.com/the_crime.html). He appears to have been rather corrupt since he tried hard to pin the murders on a man who was obviously innocent.

Thanks - I've done some study on that case. Boston Blackie had a somewhat shady past so perhaps Boyle was the model. I'd also heard that Dick Tracy was inspired by Eliot Ness although Tracy came after 1930 of course.
