    Hi Belinda,

    as the article says: We'll probably never know.
    His family (House of Wittelsbach) still denies scientists to open the coffin and examine the body. I also believe there are family documents not yet released.

      Yes those families are notoriuos for withholding information.

      I think that Ludwig tried to make a run for it. A possibly relevant point as a child he tried to kill his brother. so the "Wittelsbach Blood" may have been a factor.

      Sissi (Elisabeth) the Austrian Empress was also a Wittelsbach she was very close to Ludwig

        Whatever happened at that late, the beneficiary was German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Ludwig may have been eccentric, but he did not like the Prussians and was suspicion of the Second Reich of Bismarck. It was Ludwig, leading the other Catholic Princes, who forced Bismarck to give far more autonomy on money and stamps and political power to states like Bavaria, Wurtemburg, and Baden than he really wanted to. I am sure when he heard that the "Mad King" was dead Otto did not shed a tear.
