Most interesting unsolved non-serial killer cases

I'm not sure that I've heard of those others but the Gatton Mystery is certainly a classic. I wrote a brief account of it (as well as Collins) in America's Most Wanted News Magazine, an affiliate with the television show, a few years back. Although the TV program is still playing, the magazine is no longer being published.

To clarify - although my Collins case article was written, it did not get into print because the publication was shut down the month it was due to run. The Gatton Mystery account I wrote was published though.

There has been some infamous crimes in Australia.The'Gatton Mystery' must rank as one of the most mysterious and brutal acts of murder,and the disappearance of the three children from Glenelg in 1966 is still unsolved. As to serial killings,'The bodies in the barrels' and the so called'Family Murders' are unsurpassed for sheer callousness

What about the 'Dingo Baby' case - was that ever resolved?

And the disappearance of the schoolgirls at Ayer's Rock in the early 20th century? Can't recall much in the way of detail, except that Jenny Agutter (phwoaaaarrrr!!) was in the movie.

I believe 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' was based on a novel, though the kind of circumstantial detail included certainly gave it the air of being a real case.

Yes, I'd heard the Picnic at Hanging Rock story was apocryphal although I agree about Jenny Agutter. I could make a cream pie if I think about her too much.

True, you have Dingo as well as Arm in the Shark. As for Dingo, I wrote a brief review of A Cry in the Dark in CrimeBeat magazine back in the early 1990s.

Mr Colin Wilson, Gawd bless 'im, wrote about Holt disappearing in the sea, and went on a bit about Chinese submarines and spies and stuff. I wonder - did the poor bugger just drown?

Yes, I heard some of those far out theories about Holt. Was he another Philby? No, he probably just swam out too far and couldn't make it back or had a heart attack or something of the sort.

The murder of Rosemarie Nitribitt (Frankfurt 1957),-> Rosemarie was a prostitute with a lot of clients in the upper class.

Thanks for calling my attention to this interesting case. It looks like there was a similar murder of another premium prostitute, Helga Matura, nine years later in the same city. Do you know if there are any photos of either? I believe, as per one site, that Matura had modeled for a painter also. Was he checked out? It seems that police were slipshod in the Nitribitt case.

Since the vast majority of murders are not those of serial killers, the unsolved cases is this category should be orders of magnitude larger.

I always knew about Picnic At Hanging Rock. My Grandfather came from the area and use to go there for Picnics and always came back!

With a couple of ounces of lead.No appeal from that.
I was thinking more in the line of a confession,and regarding crimes that either the police did not solve and had no idea of the perpertrator,or the police had insufficiant evidence,but believed they knew who did it.I emphasise Confession,which left no doubt as to the truth.
