Regarding Ms Surrat, I think she was involved in the Kidnapping Plot but I do not think she knew Booth was going to kill President Lincoln. M. Surratt should of been given a prison term like Dr. Mudd, but not hung.
Sadly for Mrs Surratt, the new President Johnson, I feel wanted her to serve as scapegoat and lesson to other women out there who had committed what he, Johnson called little sins during the Civil War, as to what they could expect if they broke the law, stepped out of line again, Which I personally always thought was unfair as Mrs Surratt and women like her while termed citizens of US could not vote and they also were regarded basically as infants/children in the law, yet they could be hung for breaking the Law. Laws that they had no say over because they could not Vote.
Sorry for the mini feminist rant near the end but I do believe that Mrs Surratt only knew of the Kidnapping plot but not the plot to kill Lincoln so she should of been given a term in prison.
