so what do you think is down there?! it sure looks like some one had buried some thing there but how that deap? and what kind of technolgy would they have back then such as pirates? there is many myths such as it was captain kidd or blackbeard but what ever is buried there the person who did it sure as hell didnt want any one to find it! it was first found in 1795 and still havent got to it to this day it has cost lives trying to find it too as it is set with booby traps that let sea water in and let off gas !

I've been reading about this one since the late '60s or early '70s. Considering the nature & complexity of the traps, just how much manpower it would take to build the Money Pit and its protections, etc. I'd guess that Oak Island was used by one of the European governments back around the 1700s or so.

Unfortunately, all the excavations that have been done so far have been futile. Plus the added drawback that the original location of the Pit has been obscured by all the secondary, tertiary, etc. dig sites.

To me, this one will always remain a mystery. The original site has been messed up too much for any real chance of recovery. But how was the Money Pit designed to be opened?

Here's a link to the guys involved with the Oak Island pit. I think there's a forum somewhere about this, too.

Who was sophisticated enough to accomplish this? As Vila points out, the original excavators underestimated the complexity of the site, and subsequent attempts probably ruined any chance of getting....ahem...to the bottom of the mystery. It's a shame, really. It's one mystery that, early on, I had hopes might be solved.
