I only joined this site myself a couple of weeks ago, after reading it off and on for several years, and when a question came up on another web forum (connected to another topic entirely), I was able to direct the searcher's attention here. So glad you were all able to help!

You're welcome, Helen. I should perhaps say that not everyone would agree with the slightly critical attitude to Spilsbury in the link I posted, and that also, apparently, the onset of Parkinson's Disease was a key factor in his suicide, as it presaged the end of his career.

I'm glad you posted that last Robert, as I'd missed the link to Spilsbury's papers!
The Wellcome is a fantastic source and freely available to anyone to use; the library is vast and has material on all kinds of topics only marginally related to medicine and disease. I did the picture research some 12/15 years ago for the Cambridge UP History of Medicine authored by Roy Porter et all, it was a great project to work on and I had the run of their collections. Fascinating stuff!

Its been over 2yrs since starting this thread & I thought I'd let you know how I have progressed,
I have tracked down a few descendants of Gladys & although its sad informing them of what happened to her, the newspaper clippings has been greeted with great interest & rather oddly no one in the family seems to have known what happened to her!
I'd like to personally thank all of you who helped as if it wasn't for your help I dare say I would still drudging through files etc
Helen
