He raped and beheaded Stephanie Baird in a Birmingham YWCA on 23rd Dec 1959.

At his trial he said he wanted to punish women for causing him sexual tension.He had tried to eat one of her breasts with sugar, and had fantasised about cutting a woman in two with a circular saw.

A rumour goes that he was released after only 14 years....and he is never named in those occasional tabloid articles about long serving prisoners....

He pleaded dimished responsibility and medical evidence was given that described Byrne as an aggresive psychopath with a long history of sexual abnormality. He was, however, found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The verdict was later reduced to that of manslaughter upon appeal, but it did not alter the sentence.
