East London Railway - a shaggy dog story

In 1884 an underground (cut and cover) line (running just south of Whitechapel) linking the Metropolitan Railway and the East London Railway was completed and opened. This enabled a link between the East End and what was to become the Circle Line.

Sadly for passengers there were initially only limited lavatory facilities available...at Aldgate at one end and Wapping at the other...hence the nickname two loos, low trek...

    Sorry...I'll get me coat

    Dave

PS The first part's true at least

PPS Ripperologist 134 is a real cracker...thanks and praise to all the editorial staff and contributors...I've skimped my way through the whole thing, and there is clearly so much of worth/interest in there it's going to keep me going back for ages!

Congratulations to Helena on the very positive review of her book. Before I got put on to Bury I had just finished reading The Trial of George Chapman, and he was certainly a maniac in his own right. I'm looking forward to grabbing a copy of the paperback when it comes out.

As before, I thought Jenni's detective work on the continuing John Williams literary fraud was very impressive.

I find it disturbing that the buyers of Tony Williams's purported non-fiction books have no legal remedy against this level of outright dishonesty and deception.

I agree. It is incredible. This Tony Williams should be sued for deception or something.

I note that googling Antonia Alexander brings up a wikipedia page about the story of Antonia and Alexander. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonia_and_Alexander

          The page notes:

"'Antonia' and 'Alexander' may be mnemonic device names that made oral repetition of the tale easier, and so it is possible, if not likely, that they are invented names. "

Surely this has been noted before... Jenni?

I hope you don't mind me blowing my trumpet a little, but I did a book review for this issue (I was informed it was in it). I hope it gets some attention.

As for the puns regarding painters, I suspect we will soon be Sickart of it all.

I agree with you wholeheartedly Chris. Jenni's detective work in this case was inspired. What can be done about outright deception of this nature?

                  All the best

I think it would be a very good thing if Jenni's article could be made freely available so that people can be referred to it (e.g. on Amazon).

                          Jenni's article

Further to Chris's suggestion of making Jenni's important article available for everyone to read, Jenni and myself have agreed to put it online.

The article can now be read via the Ripperologist website:

                              Adam,
Thanks so much for posting this link, and thanks to Jenni for researching and writing the article.

How disgusting to discover how the book is cobbled together. Completely outrageous.

If I were to guess, Tony Williams saw it as a joke -- waiting to see how long before students of the WC murders discover what he's done. Plus at the same time, he's making a few dollars on his poke at the "Ripper World."
