Warm Greetings From Freezing Cold Sydney Aust-raylya!
Thanks to All Concerned in producing the latest Ripperologist.
It looks magnificent; reads well; is interesting; fresh...and most of all Cultural.
To get mentions of Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson and Gaugin and not just mentions, articles about, in the same issue is all pretty classy in my book.
Well Done!
I particularly liked the treatment of R.L.S.'s The Body Snatcher.
Made me realise what a clear, economic and gifted writer he was...
Detracters will say: "What has all that got to do with 'the Ripper'?
And my reply would be : "Read it and See".
Marvellously laid out, (like one of Burke & Hares corpses), for my money, Ripperologist is going from strength to strength.
Please keep up the good standard. And thank you for doing it.
As a recently moribunded member of the workforce, I look forward to having time to contribute an article or two myself.( If I can approach their lofty standards).
One article I should like to pen is: " Being An Australian 'Ripperologist' in the 1970's"
But talk's cheap: I am sure the Editorial team will be more impressed when I produce the article.
More strength to your Arm, Rip-Persons!
JOHN RUFFELS.
Bring on your proposed article on "Being An Australian 'Ripperologist' in the 1970's", John. We're ready.
Thank you so much for your kind words about Rip 114 and what we do generally. We appreciate your generous praise.

Hello Chris. Thanks, but I'd rather read his ghost stories. Maybe a bio of Jacob Isenschmid some day?
Cheers.
LC
Yes, certainly. Maybe there's another M. R. James fan who could write an appreciation of his writing.

You mis-understand the situation. As Tom himself has said, many of the points raised in the article had already been discussed on the forums before it was ever published. It's not like I just decided to write the article out of the blue and then Tom's letter in to the Rip was the first he'd had to say on the matter. Far from it, it had been going on for months.
Tom:
It very much seems to be that, once again, a major part of your issue with me is my age. Yes, I'm only young, (not born in the 90's though, just for the record) but why on earth should that be any reflection on my ability as a Ripper researcher? Why should younger researchers not be encouraged to come through as well? The case is at a serious disadvantage in years to come if they don't. This view says a lot more about you than it does me.
Anyway, enough said about all of this, back to Rip #114.....
With all due respect to issue #114, there's not a whole lot to talk about. And contrary to what you seem to think, editors don't at all mind when something they publish sparks controversy or prolonged discussion.
And don't be silly, your age is not a problem with me. I used to be a young pup in Ripperology and took my share of barbs (ask Howard!). You must learn to take a joke.

I'm glad you can acknowledge what I've been saying all along - that the entire reason I've been so shell-shocked over your essay is that I handed you information, knowledge, and answers on a silver platter, and you didn't use a single one of them, presumably so you could put forth an essay with no acknowledgements and be able to say 'I did this all by myself!', accuracy be damned. This might be the first time I've personally come across such behavior and I was taken aback. Also, the scene has been rather dead lately, and a little lively debate never hurt anyone.
No, clearly there isn't a lot being said about #114, but even so, I don't like to take anything away from it and this discussion probably should have taken place on the #113 thread or elsewhere.
Suffice to say that my letter of response to the Rip has now been sent in and hopefully it will clarify a few things, for everybody.

I don't see why, considering my lengthy letter was published in #114, but I understand your need to kiss butt. LOL. I look forward to your response in #115.
