Whitechapel Jews

I'm researching my family history, and figured I'd ask here than on the genealogy forums, given that this is more fitting to the JTR murders.

Being one of those people who is more interested in my families history and how my ancestors lived than just making lineage charts, I'd like some recommendations for books about the history of the Jewish community in the Whitechapel district.

Being but a poor student it's better for me to get recommendations and buy something rather than rely on amazon reviews and end up possibly disappointed.

So any ideas folks?

Hello Joel. Two suggestions about diverse segments of the Jewish community are:

1. East End Jewish Radicals 1875-1914 by William Fishman.
2. Back issues of the Jewish Standard, available through Newspaper Archive (cost: about L1 per week).

You might also try back issues of the Jewish Chronicle available through their website. Of course, the cost is rather high. And you know my personal motto:

"The Scots are the men that won't be payin' for nothing."

Both the published volumes of Booth's Inquiry and the unpublished notebooks contain a lot of material on the Jewish community in the East End. Some of the notebooks can be viewed, and more of them are indexed, at the LSE website.

I know that there is a film called Esther Khan, presented at Cannes in 2000.

I have no idea what it's worth, but it's about the life of a Jewish girl in the victorian East End, and was partly filmed in a real East End house.

I presume that details were researched.
