Howard Vincent's Police Code 1889

On this day, the 28th January, 1870 Lt. Col. Sir Edmund Y.W.Henderson, K.C.B., Commissioner of the Metropolitan Force convened a committee of five Superintendents to consider his memorandum, which read "..that there should be established a Widows and Orphans Fund and an Orphanage of small size for the benefit of children who have lost both parents." Thus was established The Metropolitan Police Orphanage and fund. The following year The City of London Police force joined, and*the name was altered and The Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage and fund was created. To commemorate this event, Adam Wood and myself, Neil RA Bell would like to make the following announcement.

"Sir Howard Vincent's Police Code 1889" is a republishing of the famous guide for Metropolitan Police of the Victorian era, with an introduction by Neil RA Bell and Adam Wood. The Police Code was written by Howard Vincent, Director of the CID, and first published in 1881. It was an invaluable resource to Metropolitan Police officers and was updated regularly over the next 50 years. The version being reprinted is for 1889, written in 1888 and in use by officers at the time of the Whitechapel murders.

Originally, a share of proceeds from sales were donated to the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage, and we are proud to announce that we will continue this tradition by donating an equal share of profits to the Metropolitan and City Police Orphans Fund. Accordingly, the foreword to the book will be written by the Met's Commander Neil Basu, who is the Chairman of the Fund.

The book scheduled to be published in April 2015.

The Police Code was written by Howard Vincent, Director of the CID, and first published in 1881. It was an invaluable resource to Metropolitan Police officers and was updated regularly over the next 50 years. The version being reprinted is for 1889, written in 1888 and in use by officers at the time of the Whitechapel murders.

Never ones to miss a photo opportunity, on Saturday - the day after the launch of Sir Howard Vincent's Police Code 1889 - authors Adam Wood and Neil R A Bell returned to Great Scotland Yard to get a snap of the book at the site of where the likes of Commissioner Charles Warren, Assistant Commissioner Robert Anderson and Chief Inspector Donald Swanson were based during the Whitechapel murders.
