Not to nit-pick haha, but I said Charles was about 30 feet from the body when he noticed it was a body not the distance Paul saw him from. As mentioned Paul never states how far away Charles was when he first notices him.
    Hi Ian,

That's a fair correction, but I would think that these 2 events happened very close to one another, so I doubt there was much difference between the two.

Thanks and I agree, unfortunately we do not know when Paul spotted Cross. But yes you are correct probably at roughly the same time.

It takes 5 - 8 minutes for the eyes to start adjusting to darkness, & then one's night vision continues to improve until some 40 minutes.
Paul just left home and unless he got started in the morning without turning on any lights, his night vision would have been lesser than Lechmere's.

Lechmere said he first heard Paul and so would have been focused in that direction; Paul most probably (although i'll get arguments about it) was not expecting anyone.

Lechmere should have seen Paul first.

Maybe he did Thomas, we simply are not told at what distance Paul first saw Cross. Remember Paul was 'behind' Cross so surely he would have heard him before he saw him due to probably not having eyes on the back of his head.

Last I checked, human eyeballs were on the front side of the head. Robert Paul was behind Charles Cross.

In addition to what Geddy and Fiver said, I doubt that there would have been much difference in their night vision. Paul had been out for a few minutes, and even when he was in his house, houses then wouldn't have been as brightly lit as they are now.
