Yes that's the point I was making.
In the translation Rappaport's profession was given as surgeon, making 'Chapman' supposedly a surgeon's assistant.
Whereas the original trade directories make it clear Rappaport was a feldscher, which in turn makes it obvious that 'surgeon' was a mistranslation or at least an inaccurate translation.

Exactly so.

Unfortunately, those who promote Chapman's candidacy as the Ripper have depended quite heavily on his having been a "trained surgeon".

I was in Bishops Stortford the other day and guessed where Chapman's pub might have been and took a quick picture. I think I was right. I am fairly sure it was where the Vodafone shop is now.

Coincidentally, yesterday I, too, visited one of Chapman's haunts....

I stood outside Praga Hospital. it's been rebuilt since he was there in the 1880s... but the church next door still stands. I went inside and feel that he must have, too. Even if he eschewed Catholicism, social pressure is bound to have propelled him inside.
