  • Fifty Most Amazing Crimes

    I've just come across a book, copyright 1936, called "The Fifty Most Amazing Crimes of the Last 100 Years". The JTR chapter, which I haven't read yet, is by one F.A. Beaumont. I'm looking forward to seeing what he had to say in 1936. In the meantime, here's a lovely illustration by Ronald Lampitt.

    Best wishes,
    Steve.

    Very interesting,

    There have been several threads on this in the past. I believe this was the book that got Colin Wilson interested in the Ripper case.

    I did have a copy for sale somewhere.

      Thanks for the info, Bob. In case people were wondering, Mr. Beaumont gives the "Dr. Stanley" theory a tentative nod as most likely, though he does not mention Leonard Matters or the name Stanley.

      Best wishes,
      Steve.

        I found a copy of this in a second-hand book shop a few years ago. Someone had spilt ink on the top edge which, fortunately, hadn't penetrated to the text. Other than that, it's in pretty good nick for an almost 75-year-old book.

        What it lacks in accuracy, it makes up for in enthusiasm. I often flip through it on winter afternoons.

          It took me several years to track down another copy but it sits in my library as we speak. A great read

            I'm pretty sure that I picked the book up in Montreal. I suppose it could have made its way there from Liverpool.

            BTW, I just noticed that the name "Jack" is written in pencil on the half-title page.

            {Cue spooky music}
