    Looking for a book....

Written by a London police officer who joined up shortly after the Ripper crimes. The author talks about Abberline, and repeats the entire Abberline/Chapman story.

One version of the memoirs was called "Manhunter", but the same story appeared verbatim in another memoir by the same author (not sure if it's the same memoir with a different title or a different one with just the same account).

Anyone know the book I'm talking about and the policeman who wrote it?

Sounds like Arthur Fowler Neil's FORTY YEARS OF MAN-HUNTING to me. He spends the first chapter on the Chapman as the Ripper theory and mentions Godley quite a bit but I don't know about Abberline.

I think an edition might have been called FORTY YEARS OF SCOTLAND YARD but I might be wrong.

Not often you see someone thanking a Gideon for a book
          Kind regards, Sam Flynn
