Adrian Webb ain't saying a single word, but Cap'n Jack says good on you John, honest critic is good for most souls, however some have their ego to fluff instead.

Well I for one think that Phillip's book deserves a big thumbs up. Do some people understand the research Phillip did? The attention to detail that he put in?? I for one think Phillip had every right to publish as he saw fit and the split page has not marred my enjoyment of this fab addition to Ripperology! In order to know virtue, we must first aquaint ourselves with vice!

'I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby release it into the public domain. This applies worldwide.
In case this is not legally possible:
I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.'
I do know that this is the legal formula that Wiki uses to fairly distribute material that has been donated to them through the goodwill of fair and unbiased researchers who are not looking to make a quick Yankee dollar.
The simple fact that this has not happened shows the greed and ego of those concerned.

You smack of hypocrosy AP.
Your own book was not initially issued to the masses free of charge. Hard earned cash was handed over to you and/or your publishers.
So stand down off that moral thrown, you're undeserving.

I thought it was Paul Webb? Confused, am I. I am also confused how Phil knew Cap'n had replied if he has him on ignore though...since no one had replied after....
So many confusing things so little time.

AP,
who are not looking to make a quick Yankee dollar
Tell you what, I am more more than willing to settle for a slow Yankee dollar. For most of my life I have survived by what I have been able to write and I'll be damned if I would give up freely the sweat of my literary brow any more than the artisan gives away what he makes or the auto mechanic fixes a car gratis. You may well be in a position to be a latter-day Lady Bountiful, but most of the rest of us are not so don't presume to lecture me about intellectual philanthropy.

Don,
However,in the case of Jack the Ripper and his murder and mutilation of a number of women, it can be reasonable and legitimate to ask about the way the material is presented regarding monetary gain.If the material is as factual as possible and not sensational, then, imo ,thats acceptable and useful and in the case of the book in question there is a lot more to interest and inform about the East End past than just the Autumn of terror. The whole collection is a fascinating document actually---as seen on a small screen a few months ago!

Norma,
Thanks for your words, but my reply was not addressing either the particular book under discussion or the field of Ripperology in general. Rather, I object to AP's repeated suggestions that writers, unlike the rest of those who labor, ought do that work for free.
As it is, let it be known I have yet to make a single Yankee cent from my Ripperological musings, far less a Yankee dollar. And, yes, I've often written things gratis for charities and non-profits (too often, according to family and friends), but my own decision and I would not necessarily urge that upon others.

There is a wider picture here, and that is the simple truth.
Some are not big enough for that simplicity.

Holy Cow, I'm sorry I brought this whole thing up! Let me clarify my point before it gets too far out of hand. I supported Phillip on his plans to publish and get compensated for his work. Who wouldn't. My problem is the whole reason for the book is the Dutfield's photo. Now I don't know about the rest of you but I live in the US and it costs a pretty penny to get things shipped here. So when I shell out money for a product I expect it to be somewhat of a fair deal. In this case it's not. The book itself is terrific and full of great pics and info but the DF pic in my opinion was presented poorly because of an ego/parnoia concerning money. It must be money or else the pic would not have been split. If you look at the last page of the book with all the folks posing and phillip holding the DF pic, look at the pic and then look at the DF pic in the book and tell me which you would've preferred. After looking over the book again I've decided to keep it and will probably order phillips other book too. I mean no ill will towards Phillip and hope he gets more than 3% on his works. I also hope he will rectify the situation later and post a complete, unmolested pic on his website soon for all to study and enjoy. I hope Phillip and everyone sees my point but if not.......
John
